In this year marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, celebratory events are taking place across the country. New York City’s Macy’s Independence Day fireworks show will be launched simultaneously over the East River and the Hudson River, allowing the public to enjoy the spectacle from various locations.
Macy’s announced on the 15th that this year not only marks America’s 250th birthday but also the 50th anniversary of Macy’s Independence Day fireworks show. The fireworks display will expand to the South Street Seaport in the lower East River, with the iconic Brooklyn Bridge serving as a central stage, integrated into the dazzling fireworks effects.
Fireworks will also be set off along the lower Hudson River, as this year’s event will feature a cross-state collaboration with Jersey City, New Jersey on the opposite bank, ensuring that residents on both sides of the Hudson River can witness equally awe-inspiring displays.
Sharon Otterman, Chief Marketing Officer of Macy’s, stated in a press release, “The tradition of Macy’s Independence Day fireworks is to unite people through art, music, and awe-inspiring visual effects. We are proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary with this intergenerational ultimate experience, connecting millions across America.”
During the holiday period, New York’s major waterways will welcome a grand maritime parade comprising historic tall ships and various modern large vessels. The Sail4th 250 event will be the largest tall ship parade ever in U.S. waters.
Previously reported, the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels aerial demonstration team, usually performing on Memorial Day, will also move to Jones Beach, Long Island during the Independence Day extended weekend (July 5-6) for a high-flying show, complementing the fireworks display with a sea and air joint performance.
Officials estimate that within six days before and after Independence Day, a series of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations will attract millions of domestic and international visitors to New York City, boosting businesses in hotels, restaurants, and retail. A study by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) projects that the Sail4th 250 event will bring in $2.85 billion in revenue for the city, surpassing the income from the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches.
For those unable to attend in person, Macy’s assures that the two-hour fireworks display will be live on July 4 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. through NBC television and the streaming platform Peacock nationwide.
Macy’s will release details regarding specific public viewing areas, traffic control routes, and the lineup of musical performances for the evening in the upcoming weeks.
