MarkSpace: Sylvare Killed, Decapitation Operation Sends Chills to Leadership

On October 17, the Israeli military confirmed that the top Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, had been killed. Sinwar’s death marks a significant event that could potentially serve as a turning point in the Israel-Hamas conflict, potentially leading to an earlier end to the hostilities.

Since last year’s October 7 Hamas attack on Israel that sparked the Israel-Hamas conflict, Israel has managed to eliminate a significant number of top Hamas and Hezbollah leaders in Gaza through their superior intelligence capabilities and precision weaponry. Now, most of the Hamas leaders on Israel’s hit list have been eliminated. The question arises whether the tactic of “taking out the leadership first” is effective in warfare.

Information released by the Israeli military indicates that Sinwar’s killing was an accidental success. At the time of the strike, the Israeli soldiers were not aware that it was Sinwar they had targeted. An Israeli military spokesperson informed the media that they used extremely precise intelligence to force Sinwar and other commanders out of their hiding places. Once Sinwar left his shelter and began to move, there was a possibility of making a mistake. The Israeli military estimated that Sinwar was forced to escape from an underground tunnel to a surface building, attempting to flee to a safer location in the north.

Following the confirmation of Sinwar’s death, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Hamas members that Hamas leaders would be systematically eliminated and appealed to those holding Israeli hostages to disarm and release the hostages. Netanyahu stated that anyone who does so will be spared.

Currently, the biggest obstacle to peace in Gaza remains the hostage issue. As long as Hamas does not release all hostages, Israel is unlikely to cease fire and will continue to search for and attack. Another obstacle is the future governance plan for Gaza – whether Israel will continue to occupy or return control to the Palestinian Authority. The lack of a clear plan from the Netanyahu government has led to internal dissatisfaction in Israel and pressure from the international community.
