Dongguan: 5 Killed as Car Falls from Bridge, Relatives Question Road Design

A major traffic accident occurred in Guangdong Province, resulting in the deaths of 5 people after a car plunged off a bridge. The relatives of the deceased have accused that the elevated four-lane road suddenly narrowed to three lanes, causing the vehicle to plunge off the bridge. Despite media coverage of the incident for 10 days, local authorities only released an official accident report afterwards.

According to reports from Vision News, a netizen posted on social media that their nephew was driving through the Huomen section of the Huan Guan Expressway in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province on May 19th. Due to the sudden change from four lanes to three lanes, the vehicle veered off the elevated road and plummeted, resulting in casualties among the occupants.

Videos and photos related to the incident show that the expressway did indeed transition from four lanes to three lanes.

Reportedly, on May 29th, the staff of the Huomen Sub-bureau of Dongguan City Transportation Bureau confirmed that a major traffic accident had occurred on the aforementioned section of the road with the exact number of casualties unclear. A special team has been set up locally to investigate and handle the aftermath. However, calls to the Huomen Public Security Sub-bureau’s propaganda department have gone unanswered.

The relatives of the deceased have stated that they are currently in negotiations regarding compensation.

The incident of the elevated road narrowing from four lanes to three lanes, leading to the fatal plunge, has sparked widespread attention among Chinese netizens. It was only on the late night of May 29th, 10 days after the incident, that the local authorities officially disclosed the details of the accident through an official report.

According to information from the Huomen Media Center, a situation report issued by the “5.19” accident task force in Huomen Town stated that on the evening of May 19th at 6:23 pm, a 23-year-old man surnamed Su was driving a car with 4 passengers along the Huan Guan Expressway. At the Huomen reservoir bridge section, the vehicle broke through safety sand barrels and guardrails before plunging off the bridge, resulting in injuries to 5 occupants who were later pronounced dead after unsuccessful medical intervention.
