Male postgraduate student from Peking University caught secretly filming in women’s restroom, detained for 5 days.

Recently, a male postgraduate student at Peking University was caught secretly filming in the women’s restroom in a teaching building. The police found six to seven previously recorded videos on his phone. The student has been administratively detained for 5 days.

According to the mainland media Litchi News on May 27th, a student at Peking University reported that on the afternoon of May 24, in the women’s restroom of the Software and Microelectronics School teaching building at Peking University, they saw someone next door holding a phone to secretly film. The student immediately contacted friends and called security, then reported it to the police.

The student claimed that the man filming was a postgraduate student from the Software and Microelectronics School who enrolled in 2024. Police found six to seven different secretly filmed videos on his phone, excluding the ones deleted on the day of the arrest.

A circulating image shows the male student being caught with a “calm” expression, hands in his pockets.

Some netizens mentioned that the school is not located on the main campus of Peking University but in the Daxing District several tens of kilometers away.

The Xing District Tuanhe Police Station responded that the male student has been administratively detained for 5 days. Staff from the Software and Microelectronics School at Peking University stated that they will report the incident and hold a meeting to discuss further action.

Administrative detention does not leave a criminal record but will result in a violation record, viewable only by the police.

This incident has sparked online attention.

Specialized lawyer and prominent Weibo user “Zhangjing_Marriage-Inheritance Lawyer” stated, “Secret filming is not a ‘small matter’ or a ‘prank,’ but a violation of others’ rights… Schools can impose additional sanctions on students involved based on the ‘Higher Education Law’ and school regulations, such as disciplinary action, probation, or expulsion. In a similar previous incident, a new student at Hubei University of Technology was expelled for secretly filming skirts on the first day of enrollment. Waiting for the meeting outcome at Peking University.”

Some netizens commented, “Is five days too short? Isn’t the cost of this crime too low? Is he still suitable to study at Peking University?” “Our school had a similar case last year, and the student was expelled directly.” “So personal character and academic qualifications have never been linked, and the endless incidents of secret filming are due to insufficient punishment.” “The punishment is too light, so they keep daring to do it!”
