Starbucks announced on Monday (September 21) that they will establish their first overseas Global Capability Center (GCC) in Chennai, India, with the potential to create around 800 high-paying jobs. Walgreens, a large American pharmacy chain, also recently chose to set up a technology center in the same location.
Chennai is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, known for its technological advancements. According to reports from Indian media outlet News9Live, Starbucks has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tamil Nadu regarding this center. The state government of Tamil Nadu has disclosed that the center is expected to provide 800 technical positions, with a median annual salary of 3.5 million rupees (approximately $36,500).
While Starbucks has indicated that recruitment will be phased based on business needs, they have not yet disclosed the exact location or official launch date. The center will collaborate with technical teams in Seattle and Nashville in the United States to support global operations, separate from the retail business of Tata Starbucks, a joint venture between Starbucks and Tata Consumer Products in India.
Starbucks explicitly stated that Chennai was chosen primarily for its local pool of skilled engineering talent, resources from prestigious institutions, robust infrastructure, and higher employee retention rates.
This announcement comes just three days after Walgreens signed an agreement to establish its first Indian GCC in Chennai. Walgreens plans to create over 250 job positions in the first year at DLF Downtown, a premium international technology park in Taramani, Chennai.
GCCs are no longer just about low-cost back-end support; multinational corporations are utilizing these centers to handle higher-value functions such as finance, software development, and research and development to support headquarters operations.
Furthermore, a salary of 3.5 million rupees falls into the high-income bracket in India. The average annual salary for regular employees in India ranges from 400,000 to 850,000 rupees, with only senior technical professionals or mid-level executives in foreign companies with over 10 years of experience having the potential to earn over 3 million rupees annually.
Tamil Nadu is actively attracting GCCs by launching special industry corridors covering various core technology areas in Chennai, including Old Mahabalipuram Road, Mount-Poonamallee High Road, and Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road.
Moreover, the state has implemented a “Special Scheme to Promote GCCs 2024-2027,” providing salary subsidies for eligible high-paying positions: 30% in the first year, 20% in the second year, and 10% in the third year.
In addition to these incentives, Tamil Nadu is a significant technological hub in India, with Chennai accounting for about 10% of the country’s total GCCs. The city excels in IT services, Software as a Service (SaaS), electronic component manufacturing, and talent supply, with a relatively low attrition rate, making it a preferred region for many multinational corporations.
Currently, companies like Citi, Barclays, and American Express have established technology centers in Chennai.
