News: Apple’s new stylus with replaceable battery expected to debut in spring 2027.

Apple is developing a new generation of Apple Pencil stylus in response to the EU’s new regulation that consumer electronics batteries must be easier to replace, according to reports by Bloomberg. The new Apple Pencil is expected to debut in the spring of 2027 alongside the new iPad Pro, with a new design that may allow users to replace the battery themselves for the first time.

The senior reporter, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, revealed that Apple is preparing to launch two versions of the Apple Pencil with a focus on introducing a new battery system. This system will enable users to easily replace the stylus battery themselves when it ages, in compliance with the EU’s forthcoming Batteries Regulation enforced since February 2027.

The EU’s Batteries Regulation, passed in 2023, specifically mandates that all portable electronic products must allow users to easily dismantle and replace batteries within their normal lifespan. This regulation encompasses not only smartphones but also rechargeable styluses, keyboards, mice, wireless headphones, and various peripheral accessories.

Gurman pointed out that the current Apple Pencil primarily charges through USB-C or magnetic connection, but its internal adhesive fixation prevents users from self-replacing the battery when it deteriorates. Most users are left with the option of sending it for repair or buying a new one.

The first Apple Pencil product being prepared by Apple is codenamed B582, an upgraded version of the entry-level Apple Pencil introduced a few years ago that charges via USB-C. The second product, codenamed B632, is an updated version of the current Apple Pencil Pro that features wireless charging.

Considering Apple’s product launch strategy, the new Apple Pencil Pro may be released concurrently with the new iPad. Gurman explained that the current Apple Pencil Pro was released alongside the iPad Pro integrated with the M4 chip in 2024.

Tech website 9to5Mac analyzed that Apple must make adjustments to its products to comply with the new EU regulation but will face numerous challenges ahead. Compared to AirPods, Apple Pencil has more internal space, making it easier to incorporate a replaceable battery design, becoming the priority for Apple’s improvement efforts. However, due to AirPods’ smaller size, balancing lightweight design, waterproof capabilities, and replaceable batteries may pose a design challenge for Apple in the future.
