Explosion at World’s Largest Qatar Natural Gas Plant: 54 Injured, 18 Missing

On Sunday, June 21st, a major explosion and subsequent fire occurred at the Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar, the world’s largest natural gas hub. The incident happened as the facility was attempting to restart its export facilities that had been suspended due to conflicts, resulting in 54 injuries and 18 people reported missing. Rescue efforts are still ongoing.

Qatar Energy confirmed that the accident took place during the start-up process of the Barzan natural gas supply facility. The Qatari Ministry of Interior later issued a statement attributing the explosion to a “technical mishap” and emphasizing that it did not pose a threat to public safety.

An emergency response team has managed to control the fire.

This explosion occurred at a sensitive time amidst geopolitical turmoil. Earlier, Iran’s blockade of the Hormuz Strait and attacks on production facilities had caused Qatar to temporarily halt natural gas production.

As negotiations started to ease tensions, the Qatari government attempted to resume natural gas exports, only to face this accident on the first day of production resumption.

The Associated Press pointed out that this incident could further disrupt the global energy market, particularly because Qatar is one of the world’s leading natural gas producers, and any fluctuations in its output could impact the global economy.

Aside from the pressure on exports, this incident also threatens Qatar’s domestic needs. The Barzan facility has a daily production capacity of 1.4 billion standard cubic feet and serves as a crucial energy source for Qatar’s industrial sector, power generation, and desalination plants in desert regions.

The extent of damage to the plant is currently unclear. Prior to this explosion, Qatar had already lost about 17% of its export capacity due to damage to two liquefied natural gas (LNG) production lines in regional conflicts, with repair work expected to take several years.

The facility is primarily owned by the Qatari government, with a minority stake held by the U.S. energy giant ExxonMobil.

A witness in the southern capital of Doha reported hearing a massive explosion at the time of the incident. Efforts are ongoing to locate the 18 missing individuals.
