On December 30, 2024, US President Biden announced on Monday that the United States will provide Ukraine with approximately $5.9 billion in additional military and budget aid. This includes nearly $2.5 billion in security assistance announced by President Biden, as well as an additional $3.4 billion in budget assistance announced by Treasury Secretary Yellen.
Biden stated that the $2.5 billion in security aid will help the Ukrainian people continue to defend their independence and freedom from Russian aggression. Since Russia launched further attacks on Ukraine in February 2022, the US has called on the world to stand with the Ukrainian people.
“Providing the support Ukraine needs to achieve victory has always been my top priority,” Biden said.
The latest statement by Biden includes $1.25 billion in aid to the Ukrainian military and $1.22 billion in Ukrainian security assistance.
“This will provide Ukraine with an immediate infusion of capability, enabling them to continue to have a significant impact on the battlefield and provide a supply of longer-range air defense, artillery, and other key weapon systems,” said Biden.
The President also stated that he has instructed the government to continue to increase assistance to Ukraine as quickly as possible. The Department of Defense is currently shipping hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition, thousands of rockets, and hundreds of armored vehicles to enhance Ukraine’s strength as they enter the winter season.
“Under my direction, the United States will continue to diligently work to strengthen Ukraine’s position in this war during the remainder of my term,” the President said.
Treasury Secretary Yellen issued a statement on Monday stating that direct budget support from the United States to Ukraine is critical at this time as Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure. Economic assistance from the US and its allies is crucial for Ukraine to defend its sovereignty and achieve a just and peaceful resolution.
Before the formal announcement of this aid by Biden, Ukrainian President Zelensky emphasized on Sunday that foreign aid is of great significance for Ukrainian forces in their fight against the Russian invasion.
“This support is crucial for maintaining the front line — every additional supply from our partners means more soldiers’ lives are saved,” he said. “We are also working to ensure that other partners maintain the necessary levels of support.”
