In order to assist low-income families in meeting their children’s nutritional needs during the summer vacation, the New York State’s Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) recently announced that it will distribute a total of $75 million in subsidies through the “Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer Program” to over 600,000 families in New York City. This initiative aims to help parents purchase food and essential supplies for their children during the school summer break.
The “Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer Program” (Summer EBT) is an annual program promoted in cooperation between the federal and state government, specifically designed to provide food assistance to eligible school-age children. Each eligible child can receive $120 in benefits, distributed through Electronic Benefit Transfer cards (EBT) for purchasing fruits, vegetables, meat, milk, bread, grains, and other food items. The state government noted that during the summer vacation, many students are unable to access free breakfast and lunch programs provided by schools on regular school days. Therefore, the Summer EBT subsidy was introduced to alleviate the financial burden on families and ensure that children continue to receive balanced nutrition during the summer break.
The beneficiaries of this distribution mainly include families who received and used Summer EBT benefits last year. Eligible recipients typically do not need to reapply, as the subsidies will be directly deposited into their existing EBT accounts. Parents are advised to pay attention to the notification letters sent by the state government to confirm their children’s eligibility and the distribution schedule of the benefits.
