Attention to those looking to purchase a cheap car: the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) will be holding routine public auctions in the latter half of this month across the five boroughs, selling a large number of various vehicles that have been seized in law enforcement actions in recent years or abandoned on the streets.
The auctions will take place at the impound lots or designated locations in each borough, and successful bidders must personally collect the vehicles from the respective locations.

The vehicles up for auction come from a wide range of sources, mainly from vehicles seized by the City’s Traffic Enforcement Division and various precincts during routine enforcement and crackdowns on unlicensed driving and “Ghost Cars.”
The types of vehicles being auctioned include regular sedans, SUVs, luxury imports, commercial pickups, as well as some illegally operated dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) confiscated in recent years.
All vehicles at the auction are sold “as-is.” Some vehicles come with complete keys and are in good condition, while others may have collision damages and require repairs at the buyer’s expense; the City does not offer any form of warranty service.
Successful bidders must take note of the strict delivery and regulatory requirements:
– Full Cash Payment: Buyers must immediately pay the full amount in cash after winning the auction.
– Same-Day Mandatory Removal: In most cases, vehicles cannot be driven off directly. Buyers must tow the vehicle by 5 p.m. on the auction day, or face a daily storage fee of $20.
– Abandonment Clause: If a vehicle is not towed within 96 hours (4 days) starting from 5 p.m. on the auction day, it will be considered abandoned again and subject to mandatory removal. Buyers may incur towing fees for removing the vehicle from the premises.
– Legal Road Restrictions: Until the buyer obtains legal vehicle registration and plates, the purchased vehicle cannot be parked on public roads or driven directly.
Buyers must present the “Sales Certificate” issued by the auctioneer when proceeding to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to complete the necessary procedures for obtaining the formal vehicle ownership certificate registered in their name.
