On Thursday, September 10, in Gastonia, North Carolina, a fatal shooting occurred in a household, leading to a swift response from local authorities who immediately launched an emergency search for two suspects. This search expanded across state lines and ultimately ended with the deaths of the two suspects.
Camryn Moore and Corey Armstrong reportedly fled Gaston County following the shooting incident.
As of Thursday afternoon, detectives obtained arrest warrants charging the two individuals with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Camryn Moore and Corey Armstrong were later found dead in their damaged vehicle hundreds of miles away from the scene of the shooting.
Around 8:43 am on the same day, Gaston County police received a call reporting a shooting at a residence on Forbes Road, prompting them to respond to the scene.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered four individuals with gunshot wounds, resulting in the immediate death of two victims while the other two sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed to CaroMont Regional Medical Center. The suspects managed to flee the scene.
The deceased victims were identified as 50-year-old Victoria Heather Moore and 38-year-old Megan Josiah Bumgardner. The condition of the two surviving individuals remained critical as of Friday.
The perpetrators responsible for the killings are facing first-degree murder charges. Detectives confirmed that Camryn Moore, 26, and Corey Armstrong, 29, were the prime suspects in this tragic incident. Heather Moore was reported to be Camryn Moore’s mother, while Bumgardner was Camryn Moore’s uncle.
Authorities mentioned that they believe all individuals involved knew each other, and the shooting incident is described as an isolated event that does not pose a continued threat to the Gaston County community.
Investigators have not yet disclosed the potential reasons that led to the violent incident.
Gaston County police sought assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force to track down the suspects across multiple states.
The suspects entered Ohio around 8 am on Friday, where state police outside Athens discovered the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it. Moore and Armstrong reportedly refused to halt, sparking a cross-county pursuit.
According to information provided by Ohio authorities to North Carolina investigators, the pursuit culminated in a violent confrontation as the suspects’ vehicle swerved to avoid spike strips on the road, resulting in a crash. Officers reported hearing two gunshots emanating from the wrecked vehicle.
Law enforcement deployed drones to inspect the vehicle and found Moore and Armstrong dead inside. Authorities have yet to disclose who fired the shots or formally announce the cause of death for the individuals. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating the pursuit, crash, and subsequent fatalities.
Back in Gastonia, the sound of gunfire shattered the once peaceful streets, leaving neighbors shocked by the violent events unfolding around them.
Loretta Forbes, a resident, expressed her astonishment to local media outlet WSOC-TV, stating that her family has lived in the area for generations, with her husband’s grandfather having built their home in 1914, after whom Forbes Road was named. The family involved in the tragedy resided next door to her own home.
Forbes recounted, “I kept saying, ‘Oh my goodness, oh my goodness,’ as I came downstairs. They seemed like good people, and I never expected something like this to happen so close to my home. It’s truly chilling.”
She mentioned that she is praying for the family affected and seeking answers, stating, “I want to know what happened; I want to understand the situation surrounding this family.”
Jennifer Greene, a friend and colleague of Heather Moore, visited Moore’s home upon learning of the unexpected absence. Gaston County Police Department stated, “This is a tragic act of violence that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. Although the search for the suspects has concluded, our investigation is ongoing.”
