On Monday, December 16th, President-elect Trump stated that he would “consider” pardoning New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who is facing federal corruption charges.
During a press conference held at his Mar-a-Lago estate, Trump was asked if he would consider pardoning Adams. Trump responded that he would “definitely consider” it and hinted that Adams’ indictment was a reaction to his stance on immigration in New York City.
“He’s basically against the entry of immigrants,” Trump said of Adams. “He made some rather strong statements, like ‘this is unsustainable,’ and the next thing you know, he’s about to be indicted. I said it’s not a prediction or speaking lightly, but that’s what I said. I said he will be indicted, and a few months later, he was.”
Adams has pleaded not guilty to five charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, soliciting donations and bribes from foreign nationals, accepting travel-related benefits, and illegal campaign contributions.
Adams has also stated that he has no plans to resign and is seeking reelection. His trial is set to begin on April 21st next year.
Trump suggested that Adams may be facing unfair treatment and that he has not seen the seriousness of all these charges yet.
