The health condition of Shanxi rights advocate Zhao Yajing deteriorates in prison.

In recent news, Zhao Yajing, a victim of the Chinese Communist Party’s COVID-19 vaccine, has been sentenced to 2 years and 9 months in prison on the charge of “provoking trouble” for her efforts to defend her rights. She is currently serving her sentence at the Third Prison in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. It has been reported that her condition has deteriorated, leading to her being transferred to the New Kang Prison Hospital 109 in Shanxi Province for further medical treatment.

According to a source named Wu Li, Zhao Yajing’s husband, Wang Hongyi, received a call from the Third Prison in Taiyuan on June 18th, informing him of Zhao Yajing’s transfer to the New Kang Prison Hospital 109 for treatment, although no further details were provided.

At a recent visit with her family, Zhao Yajing expressed extreme weakness and fatigue, with her walking pace noticeably slower compared to before. Wu Li stated that Zhao Yajing’s platelet count is low, prompting her transfer to the hospital to avoid potential complications. Wang Hongyi, inquiring about her condition and treatment plan from the attending doctor, was informed that a decision regarding her care would need to be made after consultation with higher authorities. The doctor also mentioned the ongoing high risk of recurrence for Zhao Yajing.

Since her detention and sentencing, Zhao Yajing’s health has been fluctuating, leading to a suicide attempt at one point. In early April of this year, she was previously admitted to the same hospital for treatment. Wu Li stressed that Zhao Yajing still hopes for a fair and just resolution to her situation.

A resident of Jinzhong, Shanxi, Zhao Yajing was forcibly vaccinated with two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine produced by China National Pharmaceutical Group Corporation in 2021, subsequently being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

Zhao Yajing and her recently married husband have exhausted their resources in seeking medical treatment and fighting for their rights, only to face oppression and multiple arrests. On February 26, 2025, Zhao Yajing was arrested by the Qixian District Prosecutor’s Office in Jinzhong City while petitioning the National Health Commission in Beijing, on charges of “provoking trouble,” leading to her current prison sentence of 2 years and 9 months.

Zhao Yajing’s plight echoes the experiences of numerous vaccine victims in mainland China. For instance, Wang Miao, the wife of Li Luguang, received doses of the Sinopharm COVID-19 in February and March 2021, before being diagnosed with blood disorders such as pulmonary embolism and MDS/MPN. Wang Miao tragically passed away on May 16, 2023, at the age of 39, leaving behind two young children.

Li Luguang, now tasked with both advocating for justice and caring for his children, has faced immense hardships, compounded by pressure from authorities. He emphasized the lack of assistance and the sense of helplessness felt by many in the vaccine victim community. Li Luguang shared, “We are struggling on this difficult path, with some losing their lives and others left with lasting disabilities. The toll is indeed devastating, leaving many of us grappling with its lingering impact.”
