On Wednesday, July 15th, David Beckham took his entire family to watch the semi-final match between the England team and the Argentina team. Following England’s defeat, Beckham took to social media to talk about the “heartbreaking” moment of watching the World Cup.
Beckham is a football idol in the UK, having represented his country multiple times in the World Cup. Regardless of the outcome, what matters most is the process of the game. David Beckham feels immensely proud of his country’s team.
On July 15th, the 51-year-old football icon posted on Instagram, expressing his emotions about England’s loss in the World Cup semi-finals. Beckham, along with his wife Victoria Beckham, and their three children – Cruz, Romeo, and Harper – watched the highly anticipated match between England and Argentina in Atlanta.
In the semi-final against Argentina, despite taking the lead in the second half, the “Three Lions” (England team) suffered a setback. The Argentina team scored two goals within a span of seven minutes, ultimately winning 2-1.
“It’s a heartbreaking moment for all of us, but the memories left behind can be inspiring and will remain in our hearts,” Beckham wrote when sharing photos from the match. “Thank you to our team, fans, and our country for everything you have given us during this World Cup.”
Beckham himself is no stranger to the World Cup.
As a six-time Premier League champion, he has represented the England team in three World Cups, reaching the quarter-finals twice. However, Beckham and his teammates have never been able to break through this stage. The last time the England team won the World Cup dates back to 1966, nine years before Beckham was born.
Beckham’s first World Cup was the 1998 France World Cup, where he received a red card for a clash with Diego Simeone, which nearly ended his career. Upon returning to England, he faced death threats and even saw a doll effigy of himself hanging outside a London pub.
Four years later, as captain, he led the team to the Japan-Korea World Cup, only to be eliminated again. In 2006, under Beckham’s leadership, the “Three Lions” were once again stopped in the quarter-finals. 2010 was supposed to be his fourth World Cup journey, but a torn Achilles tendon forced him to withdraw even before the tournament started.
The Argentina team will face the Spain team in the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19th at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
