Blinken congratulates Lai on taking office, Taiwan Foreign Ministry: Will continue to promote Taiwan-US cooperation

On May 20, 2024, Republic of China (Taiwan) President Lai Ching-te was sworn into office this morning, and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken released a statement congratulating President Lai on taking office. In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China expressed sincere welcome and gratitude, stating that the government will continue to work hand-in-hand with the United States to promote cooperation in various fields between Taiwan and the U.S. and safeguard peace in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China issued a press release today, stating that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated President Lai Ching-te on his inauguration. The Ministry expressed sincere welcome and gratitude for the prompt congratulations from the U.S. government.

“In his statement, Secretary of State Blinken congratulated President Lai and the people of Taiwan, expressing anticipation for cooperation with President Lai to advance the common interests and values of Taiwan and the U.S., as well as maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He also thanked former President Tsai Ing-wen for her contributions to Taiwan-U.S. relations over the past eight years,” the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out.

The Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that after congratulating the country on the successful completion of the presidential election in January of this year, Blinken has once again shown strong support for Taiwan’s freedom and democracy.
