Family of Three Killed in Car Accident in Jiangxi, Court Postpones Verdict, Outrage on Social Media

On April 15, the trial of the “family of three killed in a car accident” in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province opened in the Intermediate People’s Court of Jingdezhen. The driver, Liao, was prosecuted for alleged endangering public safety. However, the case did not reach a verdict in court, sparking discussions on the internet.

The incident occurred on the evening of October 2, 2024, in Jingdezhen, resulting in the tragic death of a family of three. According to reports, the trial took place on April 15, 2025, at 9:00 am, with relatives of the victims present in the courtroom.

The indictment revealed that the defendant, Liao, got into an argument with his girlfriend while waiting at a traffic light, causing him to become upset. Liao then pressed the accelerator pedal of the electric car twice to 100% despite his girlfriend’s pleas to slow down. As a result, the car collided with the family 371 meters away from the traffic light, leading to the deaths of the entire family. It was determined that the car was traveling at approximately 129 km/h before the collision, well above the speed limit of 40 km/h for that road section.

The mother of the victims, Ms. Hu, expressed her devastation over the loss of her son, his wife, and their grandchild. She recalled preparing their favorite dishes for dinner that night, eagerly waiting for their arrival. Unable to reach them, she sent the food to their door, only to discover the tragic news when the police answered her daughter-in-law’s phone call.

Liao, the 20-year-old perpetrator, dropped out of junior high school and had various jobs such as an online host, restaurant owner, and salesperson at a beauty institute since the age of 16. Despite his family offering 800,000 RMB as compensation and apologizing three times to the victim’s family, Ms. Hu couldn’t forgive him for shattering their once happy life.

After losing her only son and grandchild, Ms. Hu and her husband suffered from severe trauma and depression, relying on medication to cope with sleepless nights and avoiding social interactions. Tragically, the daughter-in-law’s elderly relatives passed away upon hearing the devastating news.

Ms. Hu expressed her desire for a severe sentence for Liao, stating, “Our hearts ache, and we don’t know how to face life without our son and grandson.”

The prosecution believed that due to the clear and substantial evidence, Liao should be held criminally responsible for the crime of endangering public safety through dangerous methods. However, the court decided to postpone the verdict for a later date after the trial.

Before the trial began, Ms. Hu choked up outside the courthouse, lamenting the loss of her family and questioning the humanity of the perpetrator who callously caused the deaths. The topic of “Driver kills family out of anger and remains indifferent” quickly became a trending discussion on Weibo, with many netizens expressing frustration over the delay in the court’s decision.

“Isn’t the evidence clear enough? Why delay the verdict?”,”When will the judgment be announced?”,”There must be someone protecting him from behind.”,”He may be young, but he’s an adult responsible for his actions. Three lives were lost.”,”Heartbreaking for the mother.”
