Hong Kong: 291 people arrested for alleged national security threats, 112 convicted

The government replied to the Legislative Council’s questions regarding the “Financial Budget” and mentioned that as of March 8, a total of 291 people have been arrested for “alleged involvement in activities endangering national security,” including 218 men and 73 women aged between 15 and 90. Among them, over 170 individuals and 5 companies have been prosecuted, with 112 people either convicted or awaiting sentencing.

In terms of the national security hotline set up by the police national security division, more than 700,000 reports have been received as of March 8.

Furthermore, regarding cybercrimes, Security Bureau Chief John Tang mentioned that the police are assisting the Law Reform Commission in studying new legislative proposals for 5 categories of “computer network crimes”. They are also assisting the Security Bureau in drafting legislation to define the cybersecurity responsibilities of operators of critical infrastructure, with the aim of submitting a legislative proposal to the Legislative Council by 2024.
