Target, a large retailer in the United States, is accelerating its expansion of store network. The company, headquartered in Minnesota, plans to open seven new stores in October, with an additional store set to open in November, marking the final batch in its plan to open over 30 new stores in 2026. Target had previously announced its goal to open more than 300 stores by 2035.
In March of this year, Target opened its 2000th store in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina. According to the company’s design, most American households can find a Target store within approximately a 10-mile radius.
Eight communities are gearing up for the grand opening of new Target superstores. A Target spokesperson informed Nexstar that the following seven stores are scheduled to open on October 11:
• Tupelo, Mississippi
• Bridgehampton, New York
• Cookeville, Tennessee
• Fort Worth-Chisholm Trail, Texas
• Katy Heritage, Texas
• Liberty Hill, Texas
• Norfolk-Wards Corner, Virginia
Another store will open on November 8 in Lima, Ohio, replacing the previously closed Macy’s location.
The Tupelo store, with approximately 148,000 square feet, will be the largest Target store in Mississippi and is expected to employ around 200 staff members. The two Texas stores are of similar size, with the Bridgehampton store spanning about 90,000 square feet and the rest of the stores covering approximately 128,000 square feet.
All new stores will feature Starbucks Cafés and offer services like Drive Up, Order Pickup, with some also housing CVS pharmacies.
These stores are part of Target’s 2026 capital investment plan of around $5 billion, which also includes the remodeling of over 130 stores and additional investments in employee salaries and training.
According to Target’s official website, over 30 more new stores are set to open in 21 states, including locations in Chelsea, Alabama, Denver and Monument in Colorado, Clearwater and Fort Lauderdale in Florida, Covington in Georgia, Chubbuck and Meridian in Idaho, Round Lake Beach in Illinois, Terre Haute in Indiana, Georgetown Commons in Kentucky, Denham Springs in Louisiana, Davison in Michigan, Farmington in Missouri, Albuquerque in New Mexico, Rego Center in New York, Fayetteville and Mebane in North Carolina, Fargo and Williston in North Dakota, among others.
Prior reports indicate that cities like Denver, Monument, Covington, Chubbuck, Meridian, Terre Haute, Hermitage, Gallatin, Dripping Springs, Herriman, Lehi, and Brown Deer, among others, are expected to see store openings in 2027. The Chelsea location might see its store opening delayed until 2028.
Some of the new stores will serve as core anchor points in newly constructed or expanded shopping centers, such as in Meridian, Winter Haven, Denham Springs, Davison, Fayetteville, Williston, Hermitage, Lexington, Newport, Farr West, Farmington, and Albuquerque, among other locations.
Additionally, some stores will replace old retail spaces, like a former Sears store in Clearwater, an old theater and retail area in Fort Lauderdale, a vacant Kmart store in Round Lake Beach, and a shopping center under reconstruction in Chubbuck.
Target emphasizes that the new stores not only expand coverage but also aim to provide a more convenient shopping experience and local employment opportunities.
