Ukrainian Army Releases Video Showing Drone Strikes on Russian Fighter Jets and Missile Systems

Ukrainian drone forces launched a nighttime attack on a military airfield in Taganrog, Rostov Oblast, Russia on Friday, May 29, achieving significant results. The attack resulted in the destruction of two Russian Tu-142 anti-submarine patrol aircraft and an Iskander ballistic missile launch system, with related videos and images subsequently released.

Commander of the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert “Magyar” Brovdi, revealed that the operation was carried out by the first center of the drone forces, focusing on Russian military facilities and energy infrastructure.

In the aerial footage released by the Ukrainian forces, a suicide drone can be seen diving rapidly and crashing into a large four-propeller military aircraft parked on the runway, causing an explosion and fire. Another video shows the expensive Russian Iskander missile launch system being targeted by a drone, leading to a massive fireball.

The Tu-142 is a crucial long-range maritime anti-submarine patrol aircraft operated by the Russian Navy, based on the Tu-95 strategic bomber platform, providing long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine capabilities. The Tu-95 bomber has been used by Russian forces to launch cruise missile attacks on Ukraine in the past.

The Iskander tactical missile system is an important long-range strike weapon for the Russian military, capable of launching ballistic missiles with a range of approximately 500 kilometers. During the Russia-Ukraine war, this system has been frequently utilized to target Ukrainian cities and energy facilities. Ukraine has mentioned that currently only the American-made Patriot air defense system is effective in intercepting such missiles.

However, the military airfield in Taganrog was not the only target of the Ukrainian drone attack. Yuri Slusar, Governor of Rostov Oblast, confirmed in a Telegram post on Saturday, May 30, that the Ukrainian drones’ attack caused fires at a fuel tank, an oil tanker, and an administrative building in Taganrog port, resulting in two injuries.

Taganrog, located along the Sea of Azov coast, is approximately 40 kilometers from the border of the occupied Donetsk Oblast in Ukraine and serves as an important southern port and military hub for Russia. In recent times, the area has been subjected to multiple Ukrainian drone attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed on social media platform X on Saturday: “We are bringing the war back to its source. Russia could have stopped the aggression long ago, but chose to continue the war.”

This attack occurred about two weeks after Russian forces launched a missile attack on an apartment building in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of 24 civilians, including 3 children.

As the conflict persists, Ukraine has independently developed and produced increasingly advanced and reliable long-range drones to conduct deep strikes on military targets within Russia. It can be said that Ukraine’s growing strength in drone warfare has fundamentally altered the future trajectory of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
