Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin, who accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins while filming the movie “Rust” in New Mexico in 2021, had the charges of involuntary manslaughter against him finalized in 2024 after several rounds of accusations and dismissals. Recently, the trailer for “Rust,” in which he stars, was released, announcing a premiere date of May 2nd.
According to Variety magazine, “Rust,” starring and produced by Alec Baldwin, will be released simultaneously in theaters and on streaming platforms. It is worth mentioning that as part of a settlement agreement reached with the family of the late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the original producers will not profit from the film, and instead, the box office earnings will be distributed to Hutchins’s husband and son.
On October 21, 2021, Alec Baldwin was filming the low-budget film “Rust” in New Mexico, where he was rehearsing a scene with a prop gun aimed at the camera. Unexpectedly, the prop gun contained live ammunition, leading to an accidental discharge that tragically took the life of 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, with screenwriter Joel Souza also sustaining injuries. The incident shocked the world.
Subsequently, Alec Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
On July 9, 2024, the case went to trial in a court in New Mexico; three days later, on July 12, the court ruled that the prosecutor and police had intentionally concealed evidence regarding the source of the live round that caused the accidental death of Hutchins, deeming it misconduct. As a result, the court ultimately dismissed the involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin. The court also decreed that the prosecution could not bring further charges against Alec Baldwin.
Alec Baldwin, relieved of the murder charges, shed tears in court upon hearing the final verdict. After a hiatus of 2 years, filming for “Rust” resumed, with the movie recently releasing a trailer showcasing Alec Baldwin portraying a fugitive—the first footage since the on-set shooting incident. The film is set to premiere on May 2nd.
