The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed on Wednesday (June 3) that a helicopter belonging to the Royal Navy crashed during a training mission in Devon, southwest England, resulting in the tragic deaths of all three crew members on board. Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
According to reports from various media outlets, the accident occurred around 4 a.m. local time on Wednesday while the three personnel were conducting training exercises. The helicopter they were flying unexpectedly crashed near Sourton in Devon.
Shortly after the incident, emergency response forces from Devon and Cornwall Police, the UK Ministry of Defence, the Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Team, and the Civil Aviation Authority rushed to the scene for assistance. The specific cause of the accident is currently under urgent investigation.
The location of the incident is close to the military training facility Okehampton Battle Camp, which has long been used for training purposes for Merlin helicopters of the Royal Navy.
A spokesperson for the Royal Navy expressed deep sorrow for the loss of the three outstanding naval personnel and extended condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.
Admiral Gwyn Jenkins of the Royal Navy confirmed that the involved aircraft was a Merlin Mk4 medium-lift helicopter of the Royal Navy. He stated, “This news is a huge blow to all of us in the Navy, and I offer my deepest condolences to the families, friends, and relatives of the deceased. I also thank the police and search and rescue teams for their swift assistance.”
Local authorities noted that due to emergency rescue personnel working at the crash site in a field in Sourton, several surrounding roads were temporarily closed.
Witnesses reported hearing abnormal mechanical noises resembling a malfunction before the helicopter crashed. They then saw red flashes in the sky followed by a loud explosion.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the event as “heartbreaking” and extended condolences to the families of the victims. Defence Secretary John Healey mentioned that the three deceased naval personnel had served the country with outstanding performance and will be deeply missed.
Duchess of Wales Kate Middleton, who has been Honorary Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Navy Air Arm since 2023, also issued a statement offering sympathy to the families affected by this tragedy. Meanwhile, King Charles III has been informed of the incident and plans to privately send condolences to the families of the deceased.
