On Monday, August 17th, a 35-year-old Australian man admitted to committing a federal misdemeanor for assaulting a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer at Los Angeles International Airport in March of this year.
Thomas Bingham from Melbourne, Australia, admitted to the charge of assaulting a federal officer (simple assault), which is a Class A misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 18th and will be presided over by United States Federal Magistrate Charles F. Eick.
While air travel has not fully returned to pre-pandemic levels, reports of unruly passengers have significantly decreased since the pandemic. This case serves as a reminder that even though the incidents of attacks against federal officers and airline staff have decreased, such behaviors can still have serious consequences for both the perpetrators and the victims.
According to My News LA, Bingham was accused of carrying out the attack between Terminals 6 and 7 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on March 15th. At that time, Bingham saw a TSA officer in uniform exit a restroom.
The plea agreement revealed that the Australian was in transit at LAX, preparing to fly to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS). Bingham approached the officer, accusing him of taking his backpack and passport. He exhibited aggressive behavior, grabbing the officer’s uniform, pulling on the TSA lanyard around the officer’s neck and hair, and pushing him against a glass wall. The attack resulted in severe consequences, causing the TSA officer’s hands and back to experience intense pain, leading him to seek medical evaluation.
The U.S. Department of Justice stated that airport police subsequently arrested Bingham. His backpack and passport were later found at a restaurant in Terminal 7, a place Bingham had previously visited. Bingham was briefly released but was arrested again at LAX while preparing to board a flight to the UK.
The number of such incidents reached a record high in 2021. According to data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), with the resurgence of commercial aviation activities after the pandemic, there were a total of 5,973 reports of unruly passengers in 2021, a 492% increase from the previous year. March 2021 was the month with the highest frequency of incidents, with a total of 720 reports.
