Foreign Media Broadcasts Taiwan Special: Deputy Foreign Minister Calls for Strengthening Deterrence to Uphold Peace

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China pointed out that a recent episode of the international current affairs program on the English channel of the foreign media featured a special report on Taiwan. The report included interviews with Vice President Xiao Meiqin and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Wu Zhizhong. Wu Zhizhong stated that in the face of the Chinese Communist Party’s ambitions towards Taiwan, Taiwan must strengthen deterrence to make Beijing continue to realize that “today is not a good time to use force against Taiwan,” thereby deterring the CCP.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China issued a press release stating that the English current affairs program “101 East” of Al Jazeera recently aired a special report titled “Taiwan’s Troubled Waters,” produced during a visit to Taiwan by senior correspondent Eric Campbell based in Sydney. The report delved into the military threats from the Chinese Communist Party towards Taiwan and explored topics such as the risk of maritime blockade, Taiwan’s deterrence capabilities, energy security, and the overall societal defense resilience.

The program featured interviews with Vice President Xiao and Wu Zhizhong, as well as discussions with individuals from various sectors including the parliament, industry, research, and civil society, presenting a diverse range of perspectives on Taiwan’s security challenges.

During the interview, Wu Zhizhong emphasized that in response to the Chinese Communist Party’s ambitions towards Taiwan, Taiwan must enhance its deterrence to make Beijing continually realize that it is not a favorable time for taking military action against Taiwan, employing what is known as the “Not-Today Policy,” especially in light of attempts by Chinese leader Xi Jinping to use force against Taiwan.

Vice President Xiao Meiqin of the Republic of China elaborated on Taiwan’s stance regarding the threats from the Chinese Communist Party towards Taiwan, the overall societal defense resilience, and Taiwan-US relations. She emphasized that Taiwan will continue to strengthen its self-defense capabilities to maintain regional peace, stability, and the current situation in the Taiwan Strait.

The special report also featured insights from Taiwanese legislator Chen Yongkang, the producer of “Zero Day Attack” Cheng Xinmei, the founder of United Microelectronics Corporation Cao Xingcheng, as well as observations from researchers at the Center for Technology, Democracy, and Society, Lu Caiying, and one of the co-founders of “Breaking Ground,” Qiu Qixin. Each of them provided analysis on aspects such as the potential maritime isolation by the Chinese Communist Party, Taiwan’s energy security, threats from the gray area, civil defense training, and societal resilience, presenting a multifaceted discussion on Taiwan’s societal response to the threats and defense preparedness against the CCP.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that “101 East” is an international current affairs program on the English channel of Al Jazeera focusing on Asia, which has long been dedicated to in-depth interviews and documentary reports on regional politics, security, and social issues. In addition to the broadcast on Al Jazeera’s English channel, the special report “Taiwan’s Troubled Waters” will also be released through the official website, YouTube channel, and relevant social media platforms of “101 East,” showcasing a variety of perspectives on Taiwan’s response to regional security challenges to an international audience.
