US President Trump announced on Saturday (August 30) that he will sign an executive order requiring every voter to show voter identification when casting their ballot.
“Every ballot must be accompanied by voter identification, without exception! I will sign this executive order for it!” Trump said on his social media platform, “Truth Social.”
“In addition, except for seriously ill individuals and military personnel serving remotely, mail-in voting will not be allowed. Only paper ballots will be permitted!” the president added.
The management of federal elections in the United States is the responsibility of individual states, and it is not yet clear whether the president has the constitutional authority to initiate such measures.
Currently, voter identification verification laws vary greatly among states – some states require identification with photos, while others accept alternative methods of verification or signing of affidavits.
The Brennan Center for Justice estimates that 21.3 million American citizens do not have readily available proof of citizenship documentation. Critics are concerned that these individuals may be deprived of their voting rights.
In recent years, Trump has been criticizing the US electoral system for fraud. In March of this year, he signed an executive order requiring government officials to mandate all registered voters participating in federal elections to provide proof of citizenship, and only accepting mail-in ballots received before Election Day. However, this effort was blocked by the courts after several lawsuits were filed by Democratic-governed states. The judge ruled that the executive order issued by the president to reform the US electoral system exceeded his powers.
On August 18, Trump announced on “Truth Social” that he plans to sign an executive order to abolish mail-in voting and controversial voting machines before the midterm elections next year. He urged that for the benefit of the nation, states must act according to the directives of the federal government represented by the President of the United States. As long as there are mail-in ballots, elections will never be honest, everyone knows that.
The president also said that he will work with the Republican Party to bring “honesty and integrity” back to American elections. He stated that mail-in voting is a scam, and voting with voting machines is “a complete disaster,” and must be stopped immediately!!!
There is a significant division between the two major parties in the United States on the issue of “whether identification is required when voting.” Republicans argue that requiring voters to provide proof of citizenship will ensure that American elections only involve American citizens, increasing people’s confidence in the US federal electoral system. On the other hand, Democrats believe that it is Trump who has been trying to undermine this confidence for many years. Democrats argue that non-citizens voting in federal elections is already illegal, and requiring proof of citizenship would deprive millions of Americans of their voting rights because they do not have the necessary documents readily available when they have the opportunity to register.
