On December 12, a bullying incident occurred at Jia Geng College of Xiamen University, where a senior female student was physically assaulted, resulting in injuries severe enough to require implantation of steel screws and the use of a wheelchair. There is also a risk of paralysis. However, the school not only failed to address the bullying student but also attempted to cover up the incident. This has sparked dissatisfaction among students, prompting some to organize a protest.
The video of the senior female student being bullied by students from the adjacent dormitory at Xiamen University’s Jia Geng College went viral on various social media platforms in China, including Weibo and Douyin. In the video, one student is seen grabbing the senior student by her hair and hitting her, with at least two other students assisting in the assault. The senior student is quickly knocked to the ground while emitting screams of pain. In another video, sounds resembling kicks can be heard after the senior student falls to the ground.
According to students at the school who disclosed the incident on a student forum, the altercation began because the perpetrator alleged that the senior student living in the neighboring dormitory was noisy. In retaliation, the perpetrator placed a dead gecko outside the senior student’s door. When the senior student confronted the perpetrator to inquire about the issue, she was told that she had been noisy on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. However, the senior student, who is a graduating student and usually not on campus during these days, was away from Xiamen during that period.
During the conversation, the perpetrator forcefully pointed her finger at the senior student’s head. Despite this provocation, the senior student did not retaliate and instead gestured for the perpetrator’s roommates to prove that she had not been noisy. The senior student’s roommates had previously attested to the dormitory’s tranquility, even assuming that it was unoccupied. The situation escalated when the perpetrator began physically assaulting the senior student, leaving bruises on her neck.
Midway through the altercation, the perpetrator arrogantly asserted that there were no surveillance cameras in the area, claiming to be connected to certain influential individuals and stating that it wouldn’t matter if someone died or two in that context.
The incident quickly drew the attention of other students in the dormitory. Security personnel were eventually alerted to the scene. However, the perpetrator shifted from a violent stance to shouting and making threats of self-harm against everyone present. Subsequently, counselors, family members, and police officers arrived at the scene, attempting to pacify the disruptive and screaming perpetrator.
It was revealed that the perpetrator’s parents, who own a business off-campus, were even more uncooperative. They not only refused to apologize to the senior student but also threatened to take their daughter to Xiamen for a psychiatric evaluation to evade responsibility. Meanwhile, the school authorities were reported to have been deleting the victim’s posts in the early morning hours and attempting to persuade the victim to claim that it was a mutual fight to downplay the severity of the incident.
