Philippine Armed Forces have stated that on Wednesday, July 31, the navies of the Philippines and the United States conducted a joint military exercise in the South China Sea.
According to Reuters, these two allies started joint maritime activities in November last year to enhance the coordinated combat capabilities between the American and Filipino forces at a time of escalating tensions with China in the South China Sea.
In a statement, the Philippine military mentioned that the latest exercise took place within the country’s exclusive economic zone and involved two vessels aimed at strengthening communication and operational coordination between the two navies.
The statement quoted the Chief of Staff of the Philippine Armed Forces, Romeo Brawner, as saying, “These joint exercises with our allies are crucial in enhancing the military strength of our navy and ensuring effective collaboration to safeguard our maritime interests.”
On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Antony Johnson and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin held talks with their Philippine counterparts, promising $500 million to enhance the strength of the Filipino military and coast guard.
Under the leadership of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., cooperation in the security field between the US and the Philippines, both parties to a mutual defense treaty, has increased. Marcos Jr. has leaned more towards the United States, moving away from the previous administration’s policy of deepening relations with Beijing.
A diplomatic source told Reuters on Wednesday that the US may provide more funding to the Philippines next year.
The source, who requested anonymity due to a lack of authorization to discuss the matter publicly, said, “There might be an increase in the budget for the Air Force next year.”
The source also added that the Philippine Department of National Defense has expressed interest in purchasing American F-16 fighter jets.
