The “Cat in the Hat” prank challenge that has been trending on social media platforms like TikTok has now spread to the Chinese community in Southern California. Authorities are investigating any potential threats or criminal activities related to this challenge and have issued a warning: any threats involving schools are not to be taken lightly as mere “jokes” or “pranks”.
Various bizarre challenges constantly emerge on social media, attracting teenagers to follow suit. Law enforcement has repeatedly pointed out that these challenges often involve acts of violence, harassment, threats, and other illegal behaviors, with “Cat in the Hat” being one of them.
The police department of Baldwin Park, a city with a significant Chinese population in Southern California, mentioned on Saturday (September 12) that they have noticed some “worrisome” posts on social media related to the recent trend of the “Cat in the Hat”. These posts not only mention schools in Baldwin Park but also name specific students and faculty members.
The “Cat in the Hat” character originated from the works of Dr. Seuss, an American children’s book author. Some individuals have utilized AI to create terrifying and eerie images and videos of this character, accompanied by threatening statements targeting students, schools, or communities, spreading widely on social media.
The Baldwin Park Police Department stated, “We are actively reviewing these posts and investigating any potential threats or criminal behaviors. Any threats towards our schools, students, faculty, or community will not be disregarded as jokes or pranks.”
The “Cat in the Hat” prank challenge has caused unease in the community, leading law enforcement agencies in several states in the US to issue frequent warnings and initiate corresponding law enforcement actions. Several teenagers have already been arrested or charged for posting related content.
On August 31, the Grand Junction Police Department in Colorado arrested a 14-year-old high school student following a post related to the “Cat in the Hat” challenge hinting at a potential appearance at a high school and residents’ homes.
For safety reasons, police enhanced their presence at the high school and apprehended the suspect. The student currently faces charges of “interfering with an educational institution staff or student” and “harassment”.
On the same day, the Hutchinson Police Department in Kansas issued a statement online, detailing that a 15-year-old high school student created a TikTok account to participate in the “Cat in the Hat” challenge by posting intimidating messages. The student was eventually charged with two counts of criminal threats.
Authorities emphasize that regardless of the intentions behind posting, if the content causes concern for others’ safety, it is considered illegal behavior.
As this challenge trend continues, the Baldwin Park Police Department reiterated on Saturday the importance of remaining vigilant, avoiding interaction or sharing content from related accounts, saving evidence by taking screenshots of relevant posts, urging anyone with information on accounts involving specific threats to Baldwin Park schools to contact the police, and advising to call 911 in case of immediate threats or emergency situations.
