American Coast Guard rescues missing 70-year-old hiker in Isle Royale National Park, Michigan.
A 70-year-old man, Craig Berg, who went missing on an island in Michigan for a week, was rescued last Saturday (September 12th).
The U.S. Coast Guard said in a press release last Saturday that Craig Berg went missing on September 5th while hiking in Isle Royale National Park on Lake Superior in Michigan.
Rescue teams had been searching for him until several backpackers discovered the elderly man on September 12th in Isle Royale National Park.
In a post on Facebook on Saturday afternoon, the National Park Service (NPS) stated that according to reports, when he was found, Berg was “alive and conscious”.
The U.S. Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter to rescue Berg from the location where he was found by the people, and the crew used a stainless steel rescue basket to lift him into the aircraft, later transporting him to a nearby hospital.
Federal officials mentioned that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan State Police, U.S. Coast Guard, and government agencies from Minnesota and Wisconsin have been collaborating in the search for Berg.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Berg is a resident of Royal Oak, Michigan.
Officials mentioned that Isle Royale is a remote island that can only be accessed by ferry, seaplane, or private boat. The island has 165 miles (approximately 265.5 kilometers) of trails and 36 campsites, open from April 16th to October 31st each year.
Authorities have not released information about Berg’s medical condition or specific details about the circumstances of his disappearance.
