An Indian man who grew up in a slum has defied all odds to become an engineer at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States. His inspirational story is often seen as a real-life example of the saying “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” inspiring many to strive for success.
According to information on the NASA website, Jaykumar Vaidya currently serves as an engineer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, specifically focusing on ground support equipment engineering and ground system operations for the Planetary Environments Laboratory. His work involves instruments related to Mars, Earth’s upper atmosphere, and lunar exploration missions, including instrument calibration, hardware and software development for ground support equipment.
Vaidya obtained his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 2021. Prior to that, he earned a bachelor’s degree from K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering in Mumbai.
After reading his biography, it’s hard to believe that such a talented individual hails from the slums of Mumbai, India. Vaidya grew up in the Kurla slum with his single mother and grandmother, residing in a typical cramped “matchbox” home measuring 8×10 feet.
The family struggled to afford his education, with Vaidya often relying on half a Vada Pav (a popular street snack in Mumbai) to satisfy his hunger or studying under streetlights. He started doing odd jobs at the age of 11 to contribute to the household expenses.
In an interview with Indian media, Vaidya mentioned, “There were instances when I was not allowed to take exams because my mother couldn’t pay the school fees of 300 to 700 Indian rupees on time.” To save on gas expenses, his mother would cook extra food to last for several days.
Reports from the Indian Economic Times highlighted that Vaidya’s mother, Nalini, faced challenging times, having been ousted by her husband’s family and subsequently divorced. Nalini had to take on various odd jobs to make ends meet, while also enduring a prolonged and exhausting divorce battle that lasted nine years.
Fortunately, a local temple trust organization extended assistance to Nalini’s family, providing them with food rations and second-hand clothing. However, their old television and fridge were no longer functional.
Vaidya credits his early fascination with space-themed movies and Discovery Channel programs at others’ homes for sparking his curiosity in science. His desire to delve deeper into the mysteries of the universe ignited his initial passion for science.
He attributes his accomplishments to his mother’s unwavering support, which fueled his dedication to academics and eventually led him to NASA, a globally renowned institution.
Vaidya expressed, “She is the only person in my life who inspired me to live for tomorrow. I can never repay her kindness. She gave me the drive, and I, in turn, gave her strength. Because of her, I never gave up.”
Despite contemplating leaving home several times, Vaidya could not bring himself to leave his mother’s side. As long as she is around, he believes he must stay with her, stating, “She is the force that drives me to live, succeed, and give back to the world.”
