Ernst leads Senate core group to collaborate with Musk’s Efficiency Department

In recent news dated November 24, 2024, President Trump (Donald Trump) has proposed the establishment of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to which both houses of Congress have responded positively. Following the establishment of a relevant committee in the House of Representatives, the Senate formed the Senate DOGE Caucus, which will be led by Republican Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa.

In a statement, Trump announced that the Department of Government Efficiency will operate externally from the government, aiming to “eradicate bureaucratic systems, reduce excessive regulatory laws, cut down on wasteful spending, save costs for taxpayers, and restructure federal agencies”.

Ernst expressed her pride in being appointed as the overseer, or “watchDOGE,” of the Senate DOGE Caucus in a post on the social media platform X. She emphasized the urgency to address the issues of waste, fraud, and abuse of power in Washington.

According to the Washington Observer report, Ernst launched an anti-government waste advertising campaign during her senatorial campaign in 2014, which received widespread public support.

She stated to the media, “With President Trump, Elon Musk, and Vivek Ramaswamy preparing to take action, the Senate DOGE Caucus is ready to provide crucial oversight in Congress and leverage our legislative power to combat entrenched bureaucratic institutions, reduce spending, and restore Washington to working for the American people.”

Ramaswamy met with Ernst on Thursday evening to discuss her role in the Senate DOGE Caucus and to outline the vision of the caucus. Following the meeting, Ramaswamy posted on X, expressing anticipation of working with the Senate to downsize the government and thanking Senator Joni Ernst for her excellent suggestions.

Prior to Ernst’s announcement, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene was set to lead the newly established “Delivering on Government Efficiency Subcommittee” within the Oversight and Accountability Committee in the House of Representatives. Greene will collaborate with the White House Committee led by Musk and Ramaswamy – the Department of Government Efficiency.

Earlier this week, Musk and Ramaswamy detailed their plans for the new department in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal, outlining the purpose of the caucus to identify the “thousands” of regulations that President Trump needs to abolish, explaining the necessity for downsizing government.

They articulated, “We will provide recommendations at each step to DOGE, advocating for three main reforms: repeal regulations, minimize administrative intervention, and save costs. We will focus on driving change through executive actions based on existing legislation, rather than through new laws.”

Citing recent Supreme Court rulings on state executive powers, they argued that the “current excess of federal regulations” exceeds institutional authorities and may need to be rescinded.
