Besides creating positive life experiences together, it is also crucial for couples to reminisce about the happy moments of the past. A recent study has found that revisiting the happiest moments with a partner can enhance relationship satisfaction, leading to a deeper emotional connection.
Researchers at the University of Toronto in Canada pointed out that while experts often focus on creating positive shared experiences like dates, vacations, cultivating common hobbies, or meaningful conversations to maintain romantic relationships, the act of “joint savoring” post those moments is equally important.
“Joint savoring” refers to deliberately revisiting and appreciating past positive experiences together. It goes beyond individuals recalling pleasant vacations or laughing alone at a funny incident, as it involves both partners reliving those memories together, discussing past events, understanding their significance, and rekindling the positive emotions associated with those moments.
A recent study introduced the concept of “joint savoring,” which goes beyond traditional psychological “savoring.” While savoring typically refers to an individual’s ability to perceive, appreciate, and prolong positive emotions associated with past, present, or anticipated experiences, “joint savoring” explores what happens when two people savor the same experience together.
In this study, researchers surveyed 589 adults in romantic relationships to assess the frequency of partners deliberately savoring shared positive experiences. Even after accounting for factors like optimistic personality traits and individual tendencies to savor pleasant events, “joint savoring” continued to predict better relationship outcomes. Partners who engaged in such activities regularly reported higher relationship satisfaction, greater confidence in the future of the relationship, fewer conflicts in communication, better overall health, higher life quality, and reduced psychological distress.
The study also examined the role of stress, a primary predictor of relationship strain. Surprisingly, partners who frequently “jointly savored” happy moments appeared to exhibit greater resilience towards stress.
While “joint savoring” may not entirely eliminate the impacts of stress, it helps bolster partners’ confidence in their relationship and buffer against the negative effects typically associated with stressful periods. In essence, partners who frequently revisit happy memories in life seem less susceptible to external pressures influencing their relationship.
So why does “joint savoring” work? Mariana Bockarova explains that theories on relationship maintenance suggest that healthy relationships are built not only on problem-solving but also on deliberately reinforcing positive emotional connections between partners.
Recollecting shared memories strengthens the sense of identity between partners – understanding what “we are together” – while highlighting each other’s abilities and affections, reliving the journey of overcoming challenges together. Positive experiences can then become emotional resources that can be utilized during tough times, rather than fleeting moments of joy.
Bockarova concludes by stating that practicing “joint savoring” is simple. Rather than asking your partner, “How was your day?” try saying, “Remember when we…”. Whether flipping through old photos, revisiting a favorite restaurant, recounting the early days of your relationship, or sharing memories from a past trip, laughing together can reinforce the bond between partners.
Ultimately, the happiness in a romantic relationship may not solely depend on creating new memories. It may also stem from revisiting existing memories and reliving the beauty of those moments together.
