Huang Chieh-yi holds fundraising event, voters praise her as excellent and trustworthy

On the evening of May 20th, Fremont City Councilmember Teresa Keng hosted a small fundraising event for her re-election campaign in November, receiving support from community representatives and officials.

Among the officials who attended to show their support were Fremont Mayor Lily Mei, Councilmembers Raj Salwan and Desrie Campbell, former Union City Mayor Mark Green, and Bay Area community leader Zhou Xinjie.

Americans4Hindus, a group dedicated to advocating for the rights of Indian Americans, endorsed Keng at the event, stating, “Councilmember Teresa Keng has made outstanding contributions to building a community that is inclusive, diverse, and fair. She listens to the voices of the people, opposes prejudice or discrimination, and is a trusted official who brings positive changes to community life.”

During her speech, Keng addressed community safety issues, emphasizing the need for meaningful dialogue to address rising crime rates and the demands on community policing. She highlighted the importance of investing in community policing infrastructure, expanding mental health therapy, and addressing crime at its roots to make Fremont one of the safest cities in the Bay Area.

When asked about affordable housing issues, Keng mentioned ongoing efforts to secure funding for building rental apartments for low-income families. She emphasized the importance of providing affordable housing options, such as economic housing developments, to reduce commuting times for low-income families with children attending school or parents working in the city.

Mayor Lily Mei praised Keng for her commitment to community service, especially in advocating for diversity education from a parent’s perspective and striving for equitable education for children, including those with special needs.

Mayor Mei emphasized the importance of collaboration among council members like Keng to address various challenges faced by Fremont, including the impact of the pandemic, economic concerns, public safety, and homelessness. She highlighted the role of small businesses and cultural diversity in maintaining the city’s economic vitality and called for continued support for Keng in her efforts for the city’s growth and development.

Indian-American voter Ritu Maheshwari described Keng as an excellent official dedicated to serving the community and actively participating in Indian heritage events. She noted Keng’s reliability and willingness to assist when needed.

Chinese-American voter Tony Chen commended Keng’s continuous commitment to supporting fair education, small business owners, and the community, stating that she always extends a helping hand when people need her.

In conclusion, voters joined Keng for a group photo, chanting “Four more years” in support of her re-election campaign in November.

Teresa Keng’s background includes being the current City Councilmember for Fremont’s first district, a first-generation immigrant from Taiwan, a graduate of UCLA in Economics, and a licensed acupuncturist with a Master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine. She is currently a doctoral candidate at San Jose State University studying Educational Leadership.

Having been elected as a Councilmember in 2018 and re-elected in 2020, Keng is running for re-election in November 2024. She has also expanded her community engagement through her restaurant “Milk & Honey Café”, listening to residents’ voices and their concerns.
