Tesla is recalling approximately 10,500 Powerwall 2 batteries in the United States due to the risk of fire and burn injuries. According to information released by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC) on Thursday, some lithium-ion battery cells in certain Powerwall 2 systems may cause the device to stop functioning during normal use. This could lead to overheating, smoke, or even fire in some cases, posing a risk of fire and burn injuries that could result in death or serious harm.
Powerwall 2 is a household energy storage device that can be integrated with solar panel systems to store electricity for personal use. It allows users to shift energy usage to lower-priced periods and provides power to homes during grid outages.
Tesla has received reports of 22 incidents of overheating, including 6 reports of smoke and 5 fires causing minor property damage. As of now, there have been no reports of injuries to individuals.
The recalled batteries were sold between November 2020 and December 2022 through Tesla.com/powerwall and certified installers across the United States at a price of approximately $8,000. The affected batteries are labeled with “Powerwall 2” on the side.
The recall number for this issue is 26-092.
Tesla has remotely discharged affected Powerwall 2 systems online to prevent overheating until replacement devices are installed.
Simultaneously, Tesla is offering free removal and replacement of all affected Powerwall 2 energy storage systems and notifying customers through its mobile application. The company is prioritizing equipment replacement and states that certified installers will contact customers directly through email or phone to arrange installation appointments. Customers are advised to contact their original certified installers with any queries.
