Homan: Cuomo should stop mingling with New York politics if he insists on “sanctuary city”

Federal border affairs chief Tom Homan, when visiting the New York State Capitol in Albany on Wednesday (March 12th), was also asked about his attitude towards former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s bid for the next mayor of New York City. Homan stated that if Cuomo persists with his previous stance as governor supporting “sanctuary cities” for undocumented immigrants, then he should not run for mayor.

During a rally where Homan voiced support for the repeal of the “Green Light Law” in New York for the Republican Party, a reporter from the New York Post asked him about Cuomo’s potential return to politics. The federal border chief responded, “If he (Cuomo) supports sanctuary laws, no, I don’t think (he should return to politics).”

Cuomo signed the “Green Light Law” in New York in 2019, which allows undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.

The gathering of New York State Republican lawmakers on Wednesday aimed to repeal this law. Nicole Malliotakis, who was a New York State Assemblywoman at the time, opposed the law.

Malliotakis reminded New Yorkers at the rally yesterday that many of New York State’s policies – such as sanctuary cities, the “Green Light Law,” offering free college tuition to illegal immigrants while citizens bear student debt, the no-cash bail law releasing repeat offenders, and tolls for cashless congestion – “are all brought to us by Cuomo.”

Regarding the situation in Albany, a Cuomo spokesperson told the media that New York State does cooperate with the federal government on undocumented immigrants convicted of crimes. Regarding the “Green Light Law,” the spokesperson emphasized that 20 other states across the country have similar laws, and at that time, the federal government should not have singled out New York for sanctions – unilaterally removing New York from the Trusted Traveler Program.
