Tangshan assault case results in officer’s prosecution for openly reporting dangerous situation

**Former Police Officer Chen Zhiwei Involved in Tangshan Barbecue Restaurant Assault Sentenced**

On August 6, former police officer Chen Zhiwei, sentenced for his involvement in the Tangshan barbecue restaurant assault incident, released a video stating that Tangshan authorities have located his residence in another province and are attempting to bring him back to Tangshan. He has recently cleared his Weibo account, including the report video. The day before, Chen Zhiwei had publicly accused the local police station of delaying response to an incident and claimed that Tangshan city leaders had threatened him over false news reports.

In the video released by Chen Zhiwei on August 6, he revealed that individuals from Tangshan had located his current residence in another province and repeatedly knocked on his door, urging him to return to Tangshan to resolve the matter as the leaders wanted to meet him. Due to the pressure he faced after his public accusation led to significant consequences, Chen Zhiwei expressed concerns for his safety and refrained from opening the door or returning.

According to evidence presented, on June 10, 2022, at 1:31 AM, another police incident was reported at the station. The duty officers notified “Binzi” and Wang without informing Chen about the incident, indicating that he was not responsible for responding at that time.

Further evidence showed that upon the report of the incident, labeled as “610,” to the station, Chen was not informed or given any orders to respond on site. In a WeChat conversation at 2:53 AM, the mention of “calling up Zhiwei” was made, to which Chen Zhiwei responded that he was not aware of the “610” incident at 2:53 AM and had not received any orders to respond until around 2:56 AM.

The Tangshan barbecue restaurant assault incident raised concerns as the police were questioned for the delayed response time, becoming a focal point of public debate.

According to the accusations by the Caofeidian District Prosecutor’s Office, on June 10, 2022, at 2:43 AM, the Tangshan Public Security Bureau’s Lubu Sub-Bureau received instructions to dispatch personnel. It was alleged that Chen Zhiwei, the officer on duty that day under the supervision of Han Zhiyong, the acting team leader, took more than 20 minutes to lead three auxiliary officers to the scene after the standard response time of 5 minutes had passed, allowing those involved in the violent assault to flee.

On August 6, Chen Zhiwei posted on social media, questioning why the response to the “610” incident was delayed, claiming that the on-duty leader was drinking outside with personnel and therefore unable to respond promptly.

In response to the accusations raised by Chen Zhiwei during his public accusations, the authorities in Tangshan released a statement on August 6 stating that after investigating the issues raised by Chen Zhiwei through online platforms, they found no truth in his claims.

Following this response, in a video released on August 6, Chen Zhiwei criticized the handling of his case by the relevant departments in Tangshan, suggesting a biased approach in the investigation process.

Chen Zhiwei outlined his intention to present objective evidence and recordings to reveal the true events that unfolded during the response to the incident, including the apprehension of one of the suspects and the coordination with traffic police to trace the vehicle used by the suspects to flee the scene.

He emphasized the need for a higher-level investigative department to thoroughly investigate his claims and provide a transparent account of the incident concerning him, expressing his determination to pursue the truth relentlessly.

In a message to a social media user named “Luoxiang,” Chen Zhiwei revealed that he is being pursued across provinces by the local government and requested for exposure.

Analysts, including the social media user “Luoxiang,” raised skepticism regarding the impartiality of the authorities in Tangshan and expressed concerns about Chen Zhiwei’s safety in light of the situation.

Currently, Chen Zhiwei has emptied his Weibo account, including the report video, amidst the escalating tensions surrounding the Tangshan assault incident that occurred on June 10, 2022, causing public outcry and legal actions against 28 individuals involved.
