Guatemalan Deputy Foreign Minister: Firmly Support and Strengthen Relationship with Taiwan

【Epoch Times, August 6, 2024】Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lin Chia-lung, met with the Deputy Foreign Minister of Guatemala, Orlók, on the 5th to exchange views on various topics including industrial and trade exchanges between Taiwan and Guatemala, as well as multiple cooperation projects. Orlók conveyed the firm support of Guatemalan President Arévalo and Foreign Minister Martínez for the Taiwan-Guatemala friendship.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China stated in a press release today that Minister Lin Chia-lung pointed out that the government is currently outlining cooperation directions with President Arévalo’s administration, including introducing the textile and circular economy industry chains to invest in Guatemala, introducing smart technology to improve the agricultural production environment in Guatemala, and establishing a carbon offset trading system to promote a strategic layout that benefits both Taiwan and Guatemala.

Minister Lin Chia-lung also thanked the Guatemalan government for its steadfast assistance to the Republic of China’s participation in the World Health Assembly (WHA) and other international organizations.

Deputy Minister Orlók not only conveyed President Arévalo’s and Foreign Minister Martínez’s firm support for the Taiwan-Guatemala friendship but also expressed gratitude to Minister Lin for actively assisting the Guatemalan government in countering economic threats from the Chinese Communist Party in May of this year. He looks forward to deepening the friendly relationship between the two countries through continued economic and trade exchanges and talent cultivation.

Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China, Chen Li-guo, hosted a lunch for Deputy Minister Orlók today. Chen emphasized the positive cooperation experiences in fields such as monument restoration and cultural exchanges between the two countries in the past, and stressed the importance of continuing and deepening these collaborations.

Deputy Minister Orlók expressed his gratitude to the government of the Republic of China for assisting in the promotion of high-quality Guatemalan agricultural products at the Taipei International Food Expo. He also exchanged views on the Taiwan-Guatemala trade foundation with attendees at the banquet. Additionally, upon learning that Taiwan’s Olympic badminton team won gold on the 4th, Orlók shared the joyous news that Guatemala’s team also secured its first-ever gold medal in this Olympics with Chen Li-guo, expressing hope that the 90-year-old friendship between Taiwan and Guatemala will continue to make both countries’ people proud.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China stated that Deputy Minister Orlók’s visit to Taiwan for the second time demonstrates strong support for the Republic of China. The Ministry looks forward to Taiwan and Guatemala deepening their bilateral relationship on the existing good foundation.
