Chinese Law Master Replaces Temple Merit Box QR Code, Steals Over 30,000

Recently, a law school graduate from China targeted the offering box in a temple for money. The student replaced the QR code on the offering box at the Baohua Temple in Baoji, Shaanxi Province with his own, stealing donations and was caught.

According to a notice from the Shaanxi Public Security Bureau, a man in the Baohua Temple replaced the QR code on the offering box with his own, stealing donations, and was caught after his actions were exposed. With electronic payments leaving clear transaction records, all related transactions using the substituted QR code could be traced directly back to the perpetrator’s account.

The notice mentioned that the man is a law school graduate from a prestigious university and had used the same method in Sichuan and Shaanxi to steal over 30,000 yuan.

Local media reports detailed the process of the man’s theft as released by the local police. When he noticed no one around the offering box, he quietly removed the official QR code and pasted his own, even kowtowing three times before leaving.

As the man is a law school graduate from a prestigious university, this news immediately sparked discussions.

Lawyer and Weibo influencer, “Zhuang Zhiming Lawyer,” said: “Unless he is a theft enthusiast, the only explanation is poverty. Perhaps this is the current situation for law school graduates – either struggling or showing off. In terms of cost-effectiveness, collecting waste is better than studying law. The claims like ‘my friend is a lawyer making millions a year’ that you see are just legends in the industry.”

Stock market professional trader and financial writer, Hua Rong, wrote in his blog: “If the economic situation continues to decline, various strange incidents will only increase.”

An entertainment blogger and Weibo influencer commented: “This shows that this guy really had no money, and also proves that the offering box can really make money…”
