A viral video of a “feathered singer” performing a duet with its owner has been making rounds on the internet, bringing joy to many with its freestyle vocals.
Tico, a double yellow-headed Amazon parrot, was purchased by Frank Maglio Jr. 23 years ago at a yard sale in Maryland, shortly after moving to Florida.
Initially reluctant to buy a bird due to the high price, Maglio eventually welcomed Tico into his home after the seller insisted that if she couldn’t find it a new home, it would have to be taken to a shelter as she couldn’t bring it to the UK.
“It broke my heart,” said Maglio, a manufacturing representative. “In the end, I made an offer and Tico came home with me.”
It wasn’t until recent years that 60-year-old Maglio discovered Tico’s unique vocal abilities.
During the 2020 pandemic when travel was restricted, Maglio began creating training videos for products he represented, allowing him to engage in virtual business and remote work.
One day, while recording a video playing a song on a musical instrument, Tico began squawking as his wife, Gina, was capturing the performance. Maglio was surprised to find that Tico was actually singing along to the music.
Although they couldn’t finish recording the video, Maglio had a hunch that Tico’s vocalizations were more than mere noise.
While Maglio couldn’t complete the video recording, he had a great time playing with Tico and eagerly looked forward to creating another video with the talented bird.
Entertained by the situation, Maglio posted the video on Facebook, and a client’s wife, familiar with parrot behavior, suggested starting a YouTube channel.
Thus, they created a channel, and today, Tico has gained widespread fame on the internet. Their channel, “Tico & the Man Frank Maglio,” boasts 440,000 subscribers, with over 97 million views and 793 videos, garnering 4.6 million views in the past month alone.
For Maglio, these impromptu musical performances with Tico mean “everything,” as the bird also enjoys performing alongside him.
Describing the bird as a “bandmate in real life,” Maglio shares that their relationship is one of mutual reliance, though not necessarily love. Regardless, he greatly appreciates Tico’s company.
One of their most popular videos on YouTube is “Strut Right By,” which has already amassed over 9 million views.
Maglio particularly enjoys Tico’s rendition of the song “Brazil,” where the parrot attempts to sing in Latin, showcasing impeccable timing and rhythm.
Another favorite of Maglio’s is Prince’s “Purple Rain,” which they recently recorded to commemorate its 40th anniversary.
Describing their channel as a place where people can watch with smiles and joy, Maglio says their fan base is “very friendly” and their videos inspire him to continue.
In recent times of turmoil, people from a war-torn country have sought solace in watching Tico’s performances underground, expressing gratitude for the hope and light the duo brings during difficult times.
With their channel’s massive success, Maglio is gearing up for the next chapter. The couple recently purchased an RV, planning to tour and hold fan meet-ups. It’s an exciting time for Maglio, his fans, and undoubtedly, for Tico too.
