Russia’s comprehensive invasion of Ukraine has lasted over four and a half years, with the losses suffered by Russian forces being a closely guarded secret. According to intelligence revealed by a senior British military official, the overall losses of the Russian armed forces may exceed what the public imagines.
In a report by Sky News on Friday, September 11, Sir Richard Knighton, the Chief of the Defence Staff of the British Armed Forces and Air Chief Marshal, stated that since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, at least 500,000 Russian military personnel have died in the war, with the total casualties (including wounded) possibly reaching as high as 1.5 million.
Knighton emphasized that the death of 500,000 individuals means that there are 500,000 families in Russia who will never see their fathers, sons, brothers, or husbands again. Most of these losses occurred after January 2023, during which time the Russian military only managed to acquire about 2% of Ukrainian territory.
He pointed out that these numbers clearly indicate that Russia has needlessly sacrificed a significant number of lives for such minimal progress and for the illegitimate goals of Putin. The war has now been ongoing for 1,660 days since Moscow initiated total warfare, surpassing the duration of Russia’s involvement in both World War I and World War II in Ukraine.
Knighton highlighted that this war has not only had a negative impact on Russia’s population but has also greatly affected the country’s economy. The armed aggression has impeded economic growth, weakened consumer demand, and led to prolonged high inflation. Russia’s economy, the well-being of its people, and its long-term prospects have all suffered immense losses.
Western officials note that despite Russia’s staggering personnel and economic losses, there are currently no signs indicating that Putin has changed his goal of using force to bring Ukraine into Moscow’s sphere of influence.
According to daily updates released by the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as of September 11, 2026, the cumulative combat losses of the Russian military since February 24, 2022, amount to approximately 1,503,880 individuals, including those killed, wounded, and other personnel losses.
This reveals that the assessments of British intelligence agencies align with the data disclosed by the Ukrainian General Staff, collectively reflecting the heavy toll of personnel losses suffered by Russia during the full-scale war against Ukraine.
