The Section 8 Housing Voucher program, funded by the federal government and administered by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), is once again open for applications to low-income families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. The application period lasts for one week. Democratic leader in the 65th district, Yu Jinshan, stated that there is a high demand for housing vouchers among the Chinese community. On the first day of the application opening this Monday (3rd), volunteers from the Eastward Association were able to assist over 60 low-income families in completing their registration.
Yu Jinshan mentioned that on the first day of the Section 8 Housing Voucher application opening, more than ten people were already waiting outside the Eastward Association at 9 a.m. to register, and by 10 a.m., there were dozens of people waiting for assistance. Those who successfully completed the registration expressed their hope to be selected by the Housing Authority in the lucky draw in August.
Yu Jinshan added that after submitting the application, applicants will have to wait until August for the Housing Authority to announce the results of the lucky draw. Only by applying can there be hope of being selected in the draw.
The volunteer team from the Eastward Association is dedicated to serving the community and can assist Chinese residents who have language barriers or are unfamiliar with using computers to fill out the online application. The volunteer team will provide free assistance to those in need for seven days a week this week from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 88 East Broadway, inside the Eastward Association office (within the Yi Dong Shopping Mall).
The Eastward Association reminds that only 60 applications can be processed each day, and individuals can visit in advance to obtain a reservation card. When applying, valid identification, work ID, 2023 tax return, and proof of address must be presented.
This year, there are 200,000 quotas available for applications, handled on a first-come, first-served basis. The selection of all applicants will be determined by a random draw to allocate the quotas. Everyone has an equal opportunity. Qualified applicants can only apply once, but each eligible member of the family can apply. The annual household income of the applicant must not exceed the following limits: $54,350 for a 1-person household, $62,150 for a 2-person household, $69,900 for a 3-person household, $77,650 for a 4-person household, $83,850 for a 5-person household, $90,050 for a 6-person household, $96,300 for a 7-person household, and $102,500 for an 8-person household.
