Zheng Liwen’s Praise of Xi Jinping Causes Controversy: Beijing Scholar Says Xi’s Reputation Is Tarnished

On April 10, the Chairman of the opposition party in Taiwan, the Kuomintang (KMT), met with the Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping in Beijing and made a statement. During her speech, she praised China under Xi Jinping’s leadership for achieving “complete poverty alleviation” and becoming a “moderately prosperous society,” mentioning concepts of “national rejuvenation” and “community of shared future,” which sparked ridicule. Scholars in Beijing pointed out that Zheng Liwen’s admiration for Xi was unwise, as Xi’s reputation is tarnished both domestically and internationally. Some members of Taiwan’s legislature believe that Zheng’s speech bears traces of being orchestrated by the Chinese Communist Party.

During the meeting between Zheng and Xi on April 10, Zheng Liwen openly praised Xi Jinping, claiming that under his leadership, the development in mainland China has not only achieved complete poverty alleviation and built a comprehensive moderately prosperous society with extraordinary achievements, but is also continuing to soar. The planning for the 15th Five-Year Plan has just begun and is expected to reach new heights, which is worth looking forward to.

Zheng Liwen used Xi Jinping’s commonly used phrase “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation” and stated that both sides should transcend political antagonism, collectively contemplate and construct a win-win and prosperous “community of shared future” across the strait, and so on.

In response to this, netizens on X platform overwhelmingly criticized: “China’s economy is in shambles.” “You might as well directly apply to join the Communist Party, there’s no need to go back.” “I can see clearly now, this lady is here to completely uproot the KMT.” “Brothers and sisters across the strait are currently living in dire straits.” “When did I get out of poverty, I don’t even know myself, how does she know.”

Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang once publicly stated that 600 million people in China have a monthly income of only a few hundred RMB, implicitly contradicting Xi Jinping’s poverty alleviation achievements.

Regarding Zheng Liwen’s praise for Xi in Beijing, Beijing scholar Yang Ming (pseudonym) deemed it unwise. He told Da Ji Yuan that some people in Taiwan may not be aware that Xi Jinping’s reputation is tarnished both domestically and internationally, facing opposition from all sides, and being regarded as stubborn and conservative without genuine recognition either domestically or internationally.

Yang Ming stated that as Xi Jinping still tightly controls power, everyone is currying favor with him. Those around him, including Cai Qi and Wang Huning who attended the meeting between Zheng and Xi, are merely profit-seeking, hoping to maintain their privileged interests by staying close to Xi.

Yang Ming argued that Xi Jinping had Zheng Liwen visit before Trump’s visit to China as a gesture for Trump to see. “By saying that the KMT used to be in power, and now it is still the second largest party in Taiwan and the biggest opposition party, it means endorsing our Communist Party’s so-called ‘one country, two systems’ policy towards Taiwan, asking Trump not to support Taiwan anymore.” This kind of propaganda holds no practical significance, but the Chinese Communist Party, as an authoritarian dictatorship, thrives on such flashy but empty propaganda.

This Beijing scholar expressed that Taiwan, in politics, academia, civil society, business, and the media, is infiltrated by the CCP to an alarming extent. Taiwanese people often bask in their achievements, constantly enjoying a peaceful and prosperous life, without erecting any defenses against such a totalitarian and evil regime as the CCP, which is extremely dangerous.

Taiwanese legislator Lin Junxian posted on Facebook on the 10th, stating that Zheng Liwen’s speech needs special attention and vigilance. This speech transcript clearly shows heavy traces of being orchestrated by the CCP. The most obvious signs are in the passage about “complete poverty alleviation” and building a comprehensive moderately prosperous society, as well as terms like “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation” and “community of shared future,” all being propaganda terms of the CCP, arranged for the Chinese people to hear through Zheng Liwen, having nothing to do with the Taiwanese people.

Chinese affairs expert Li Lin told Da Ji Yuan on the 10th that it is astonishing for Zheng Liwen to use a large number of phrases from the CCP’s political culture. Especially her proactive mention of “community of shared future,” a label from the Xi era, blatantly signifies an intention to unite with the Red Dynasty of the CCP.

Wang Hong-Ren, a professor in the Department of Political Science at National Cheng Kung University, analyzed for the Central News Agency that Zheng Liwen’s speech made significant concessions and even mentioned “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation,” pushing the discourse of Taiwan’s subjectivity backward, showing a clear sign of coordination with Xi Jinping.
