Martin Luther King Jr. Day Traffic Adjustments: New York Subway Adopts Saturday Schedule

On January 19th (Monday), the Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be commemorated in New York. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced that on that day, the New York City subway, buses, and several commuter rail lines will operate on a holiday schedule. MTA reminds commuters and tourists to check the schedule information in advance to avoid any disruptions to their travels.

According to the MTA announcement, the subway system, Staten Island Railway, and Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) will operate based on the Saturday schedule. While most routes will maintain basic services, the frequency of trains and stops will be different from regular weekdays, and some routes will have temporary adjustments due to construction or holiday arrangements.

In the city, bus services will follow an “adjusted weekday schedule,” including regular buses, express buses, and Select Bus Service (SBS) routes. However, specific express lines or certain segments may temporarily suspend service, so passengers are advised to verify the route conditions before heading out.

On the Metro-North side, the Hudson Line, Harlem Line, and New Haven Line will all operate on the Saturday schedule, with additional trains during some periods to meet the holiday travel demand.

On the day of the commemoration, several routes will experience significant changes, such as the Z line being suspended all day, and the W Line and 42nd Street Shuttle not providing service. Additionally, multiple lines like the L, J, 4, 5, 7, A, C, D, and G lines will see stoppages, shortened routes, or skip-stop service on certain sections, especially during off-peak hours in the early morning and daytime.

MTA mentioned that routine maintenance and construction work will still be ongoing during the holiday period, and the actual service conditions may be adjusted at any time. Passengers are encouraged to utilize the MTA official website (mta.info), MTA App, or TrainTime App to promptly check for the latest service updates and route announcements.
