The 10 Most Sought-After Postal Districts in the US Housing Market in 2026: 7 in the Northeast.

According to the 2026 annual report released by Realtor.com, the top 10 most sought-after postal code areas in the U.S. have been dominated by the Northeast and Midwest for the fourth consecutive year. These areas are mainly concentrated in the “hot suburban corridors” surrounding major cities like New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Detroit.

This highlights that the residential environments near major cities continue to strongly attract today’s homebuyers. In these areas, the average number of views per listing is 3.0 to 5.3 times higher than the national average, and the time to sell is 30 to 42 days shorter than the national average.

The report points out that these 10 regions all belong to the “ideal suburban corridors,” where homebuyers can enjoy a slower pace of life without giving up access to economic opportunities in the city center.

Below is the list of the top 10 hottest postal code areas in the U.S. in 2026:

Despite the high mortgage rates slowing down the overall real estate transactions in the U.S., these top postal code areas stand out with their unique market dynamics. A deeper analysis of this year’s data reveals three core trends in these popular areas:

1. Pursuit of larger spaces and quality of life:
Buyers are no longer just looking for the lowest house prices but are willing to pay a premium for houses in the suburbs around major employment centers with “larger spaces and mature development.”

2. Extremely tight inventory:
The housing inventory in popular areas is 60.5% lower than the normal pre-pandemic levels (compared to the national average shortage of only 11.3%), which has significantly increased competition due to high demand and low supply.

3. Strong financial capabilities of buyers:
Successful buyers have stronger financial capabilities, with an average down payment ratio of 19.4% (compared to the national average of 13.1%) and a credit score (FICO median of 766) higher than the national standard.
