Los Angeles County law enforcement officials have announced that they have started issuing citations to vehicles violating the illegal California Daylighting Law on the roadside.
The Daylighting Law, also known as California AB413, prohibits parking, standing, and parking within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalks, with a curb extension reducing the distance to 15 feet. On two-way roads, parking is only allowed on the right side, while parking on both sides is prohibited on one-way streets.
This law restricting roadside parking went into full effect on January 1, 2025, but enforcement efforts vary across different areas.
On June 30, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) reminded residents that their Parking Enforcement Division (PED) has not only started issuing citations to violators but is also enforcing county regulations regarding “nonconforming vehicles,” which restrict parking for specific oversized and noncompliant vehicles.
According to the regulations, any vehicle or trailer (including fixed devices, accessories, and items on them) exceeding the legal limits in width, height, or length is considered a “nonconforming vehicle.” The limits are as follows: 8 feet in width, 7.5 feet in height, and 20 feet in length. Large RVs, camper vans, commercial trucks, or oversized cargo trailers are common examples of nonconforming vehicles.
The ordinance went into effect on March 3, 2026, and includes penalties for trailers, applicable only in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Owners of nonconforming vehicles must apply for a resident or single-day visitor parking permit at the local police station, with violators facing fines.
Regardless of which provision is violated, the fine amount is $63.
