Japanese former Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda to Lead Delegation to Visit Taiwan, Will Meet with Lai Ching-te

Former Japanese Prime Minister and Senior Advisor to the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, Yoshihiko Noda, led a delegation to visit Taiwan today (August 20). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China announced that Yoshihiko Noda will meet with President Lai Ching-te and deliver a keynote speech at the Ketagalan Forum scheduled for the 21st.

According to reports from Japanese media, Yoshihiko Noda, a former Prime Minister from the Constitutional Democratic Party, departed from Haneda Airport in Japan this morning to embark on a 3-day visit to Taiwan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China released a press statement, stating that former Japanese Prime Minister and Senior Advisor to the Constitutional Democratic Party, Yoshihiko Noda, along with a delegation, will visit Taiwan from the 20th to the 22nd, with members including Jinzo Tezuka, Shunsuke Ito, and Retsu Suzuki totaling 4 people. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warmly welcomes the delegation led by former Prime Minister Noda to Taiwan for exchanges.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China stated that during his time in Taiwan, former Japanese Prime Minister Noda will participate in the 8th Ketagalan Forum organized by the Prospect Foundation, titled “2024 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue,” where he will deliver a keynote speech. He is also scheduled to meet with President Lai Ching-te, as well as hold discussions with officials such as Su Jia-chyuan, Chairman of the Taiwan-Japan Relations Association, exchanging views on Taiwan-Japan relations and regional issues.

Representative Noda has held positions such as Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in Japan and currently serves as the Senior Advisor of the largest opposition party in Japan, the Constitutional Democratic Party, commanding respect in Japanese politics. His visit not only highlights the close relationship between Taiwan and Japan but also serves to further enhance substantive exchanges, cooperation, and friendly relations between Taiwan and Japan in various fields.

The 8th Ketagalan Forum: 2024 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue will take place on the 21st. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China announced on the 13th that this is the first regional security forum hosted by the new government, aiming to enhance communication and dialogue with relevant parties through this platform, urging the international community to pay closer attention to peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region. This year, special guests for the forum include former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, former Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger, and former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who will deliver keynote speeches.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China emphasized that the forum has invited 15 policymakers, parliamentarians, and scholars from 11 countries such as the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, India, Israel, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Denmark to discuss the grey zone conflicts in the Taiwan Strait, South China Sea, and East China Sea, building economic resilience and de-risking, Taiwan’s role in stabilizing the global supply chain for semiconductors, as well as issues concerning digital authoritarianism through the dissemination of misinformation and its impact on democracy.
