August in New York City: 9 Fun Events Including Free Italian Gelato

Summer is the season for vacations for New Yorkers. But for those who can’t get away, there are plenty of fun and free activities to participate in right in the city! This newspaper has selected nine completely free and interesting events in New York City for August, allowing you to enjoy the pleasures of the big city on hot summer nights.

1. US Open “Fan Week”

From August 18 to 23, you can attend the US Open qualifying matches and interactive activities for free at the Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. Experience the exciting atmosphere of a major sporting event without the need for tickets to the main tournament.

2. Metropolitan Opera Theater Festival

From August 22 to September 1, classic operas such as “The Marriage of Figaro” and “Aida” will be projected on a giant screen outside the Metropolitan Opera House every night at 8 pm, with the opening film being “Maestro”. Free entry for all viewers.

3. Free Ice Cream Tasting at Italian restaurant Eataly

On August 7 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Eataly located at the Flatiron Marketplace will host an ice cream festival where customers can taste Italian ice cream for free. Limited servings are available, so it’s recommended to arrive early to queue.

4. Staten Island Fishing Experience

On August 9 from 10 am to 11:30 am, enjoy free shore fishing or learn fish catching activities using a seine net at the Staten Island Conference House Park.

5. Bryant Park Music Nights

On August 1, 8, and 15 at 8 pm, Bryant Park will host jazz and string music performances featuring contemporary young jazz artists like Endea Owens for free.

6. Explore Sand Sculptures at Coney Island

On August 16 (Saturday) from 12 pm to 4 pm, sand sculpture enthusiasts can visit Coney Island to witness a sand sculpture competition and watch masterpieces come to life on the beach. Check out how these sand castles are crafted out of nothing, and grab a hot dog while you’re at it!

7. Free Yoga Classes at Domino Park

The Kula Yoga Project at Domino Park offers free yoga classes on August 3, 17, and 31 at 10 am on Sundays.

8. Free Outdoor Concert at Central Park

On August 1 at 7:30 pm, the UK Chamber Orchestra and the Westerlies brass band will perform at the Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park, featuring world premiere new pieces and classic compositions.

9. Boxing Performance

Danse Theatre Surreality will offer a therapeutic, boxing, and performance experience at the HAVEN Boxing Theater in Williamsburg on August 3 (Saturday). In this free event, boxing is not mandatory, but if you’re up for it, it could be a fun experience.
