The mainland athletic variety show “The Voice of China” season 2 contestant Bi Xia, after experiencing the passing of her singer husband Zhang Hengyuan due to cancer, was severely injured in a car accident in June last year. On April 29 this year, she revealed on Weibo that in the six months after the accident, she underwent two skull surgeries, but fortunately, she is gradually recovering.
In a video shared on Weibo, Bi Xia appeared with a neat short haircut, not only playing and singing by herself but also practicing dance. She recalled that her pupils were dilated when the accident happened but fortunately, after being rescued by the medical team, she is gradually recovering. She expressed gratitude, “God has blessed me, I can eat, sleep, sing, dance, and take care of myself.”
Bi Xia, 33 years old this year, participated in “The Voice of China” season 2 as the lead singer of a band in 2013. She gained the turning of the chairs from mentors Wang Feng, Harlem Yu, and A Mei with a song “Free Like a Dream”, eventually becoming one of the top four in Wang Feng’s team.
Bi Xia gained attention on the show for her powerful vocal performance and met and fell in love with Zhang Hengyuan, who also belonged to Wang Feng’s team. After a 9-year long-distance relationship, the two got married, and their son was born in August 2022. Unexpectedly, Zhang Hengyuan passed away on June 13, 2023, at the age of 36 due to malignant melanoma.
According to Chinese media reports, Zhang Hengyuan was in his early 20s when he participated in “The Voice of China” and impressed the mentors with his good singing skills in his performance of the song “Can’t Escape”. With outstanding vocal talent and singing skills, he received turns from Na Ying, A Mei, Harlem Yu, and Wang Feng during the blind audition, which was not common in the history of “The Voice” stage. In the end, Zhang Hengyuan won the championship in Wang Feng’s team and became the runner-up in the national year-end final.
Many netizens noticed that after Zhang Hengyuan’s passing, Wang Feng promised on Weibo to help Bi Xia, “You must stay strong, take care of your child and your family. You all must be well, this must also be Hengyuan’s last and deepest wish. The teacher promised that no matter how difficult, I will help you.”
