Tsinghua University Student Studying Abroad in the Netherlands Missing for Nearly a Month, Police Discover Suspicious Corpse

The 23-year-old graduate of Tsinghua University, Luo Shengmen, who has been missing for nearly a month, remains unaccounted for. On March 21, the Amsterdam police in the Netherlands found a body in the water near the area where he disappeared, but the identity has not been confirmed.

Luo Shengmen has been missing since the evening of February 23. That evening around 6 p.m., he was last seen at a supermarket near his apartment. According to a report by the “Xiaoxiang Morning Post,” witnesses recalled that Luo Shengmen was wearing “black or dark-colored clothing, with loose hair, and carrying a backpack.”

On February 24, a senior student who collaborated with Luo Shengmen on academic projects couldn’t reach him. On the evening of February 26, a roommate in the dormitory reported him missing. After the police entered his room, they stated there were “signs of normal life” and advised to observe for two more days.

On March 14, the Dutch police dispatched helicopters and search teams to the De Oeverlanden nature reserve in Amsterdam Nieuw-West for a search but found no new clues.

Luo Shengmen, a 23-year-old from Yiyang, Hunan, graduated from the Philosophy Department of Tsinghua University, and in August 2024, he went to the Logic, Language, and Computation research institute in Amsterdam, the Netherlands to pursue a master’s degree.

On March 17, Luo Shengmen’s uncle mentioned that currently, there have been no breakthrough developments in the Dutch police investigation. Luo Shengmen’s mother and younger brother have arrived in the Netherlands.

The family also learned from the Dutch police that another one of Luo Shengmen’s phones had activity signals ten days after his disappearance. Specific location information was not provided by the police due to ongoing investigations.

Previously, the news of Luo Shengmen being missing in Amsterdam for over two weeks had sparked concern.

It was reported that Luo Shengmen’s phone, passport, and other items were found in his apartment where he lived. The police informed the family that Luo Shengmen’s bank card transactions halted on February 22.

On March 5, the police contacted Luo Shengmen’s domestic classmate, who mentioned that there were no unusual circumstances during their last contact on February 23.

Luo Shengmen’s mother last contacted him on February 23 as well. At that time, he mentioned he was working on his assignment, and since then, there has been no communication. She mentioned that for several days, her son did not reply to her messages, which made her anxious, leading her to call the embassy.

On March 5, the staff at the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands stated they were aware of the situation but couldn’t disclose specific details.

Currently, the police have not released the identity of the body, and the investigation is ongoing.
