Paramount has canceled the production of the “Dungeons & Dragons” TV series, sparking speculation about the difficulty of realizing a sequel to “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.” However, actor Chris Pine, who played the role of the “Bard” in the series, recently stated that a sequel is not impossible, and it will depend on funding.
According to CBR, Chris Pine, the male lead of “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (2023), discussed the possibility of a sequel at a superhero comic convention. Pine mentioned that given the interest of fans in watching a new film, the possibility of a sequel seems promising, but currently, finances pose the biggest obstacle. He stated that if producers could secure a reasonable budget, the second film could move forward.
Pine said, “I think it’s very likely that we’ll make another movie… If they can figure out a way to fund it, they will do it.”
Originally slated for production in January 2023, Paramount+ was set to produce a live-action version of “Dungeons & Dragons.” Following the release of Paramount Pictures’ “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” in March 2023, the film received positive reviews from critics and audiences on the review site Rotten Tomatoes, with 91% and 93% approval, respectively.
However, according to reports from foreign media, despite the film’s production budget of $150 million, the global box office revenue ultimately amounted to $208 million, which did not result in profits considering marketing and distribution costs. In May 2024, Paramount canceled the production of the “Dungeons & Dragons” TV series, further diminishing the likelihood of a film sequel.
In November last year, Pine, at a press conference for Disney’s new animated movie “Wish,” told Total Film that he had heard rumors about a film sequel but knew little about it. He expressed confidence that it was likely to happen and publicly stated that if it did happen, he would “definitely” return.
“I’ve heard some rumors about it. But I don’t know anything yet. But I feel pretty confident that it may happen.”
According to ScreenRant, “Dungeons & Dragons 2” has not been confirmed yet but could still happen under certain conditions. Paramount CEO Brian Robbins mentioned “Dungeons & Dragons 2” and stated that if the sequel were to be released, the studio would need to find a way to produce it with less funding.
