Houston’s 113th Double Ten National Day Celebration Preparatory Committee held a “handover ceremony” on Saturday, June 8th at 10 am in the exhibition hall of the Overseas Chinese Education Center. The event marked the transition of leadership from the 112th National Day Celebration Committee Chair, Yang Chong, to the newly elected 113th National Day Celebration Committee Chair, Yang Jialing. The ceremony was attended by officials including Director Xiao Yifang from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Director Wang Yingrong from the Overseas Chinese Education Center, Committee member Liu Xiumei, as well as leaders and representatives from various community organizations.
In her speech, Xiao Yifang praised the impressive activities organized by the Celebration Committee over the past year under Yang Chong’s leadership. She expressed appreciation for the team led by Yang Chong and welcomed Yang Jialing as the new chair. With experience as vice chair, Yang Jialing is expected to bring a fresh perspective to elevate the visibility and influence of Taiwan in mainstream society through National Day activities. Wang Yingrong thanked Yang Chong for his leadership in promoting Taiwan to the mainstream and for organizing successful large-scale events. She also expressed gratitude to community leaders and representatives for their support in advancing overseas Chinese affairs.
Under the supervision of Xiao Yifang and Wang Yingrong, Yang Chong handed over the official seal symbolizing the Celebration Committee to Yang Jialing. Yang Chong expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with the committee, make new friends in the community, and complete missions with team support. He then invited Finance Minister Li Yuxun to report on the financial summary of the previous year and transfer the remaining funds to this year’s committee. Yang Jialing, on behalf of the community, presented a “Striding into the Mainstream, Achievements in the Overseas Chinese Community” medal to Yang Chong.
In her address, Yang Jialing expressed trepidation and determination in taking on the role of committee chair, inheriting many traditions such as promoting Taiwan to the world. She welcomed new and younger team members this year, aiming to initiate a new milestone of generational transition. The goal of this year’s activities is to break through echo chambers and attract a diverse range of age groups for a truly inclusive National Day celebration involving all overseas Chinese and Taiwanese.
Yang Jialing made three commitments: 1) dedicated use of funds, 2) transparency, and 3) fulfilling promises. She emphasized the importance of teamwork over individual perfection and drew inspiration from a quote, “The beginning of all things is passionate, but success belongs to those who persevere.” Lastly, she introduced the team of the 113th National Day Celebration Preparatory Committee.
